Mark's quite right. You don't want anything too complicated and in terms of value-for-money the Baofeng is unbeatable.

If you want to go up-market a step, then I'd say the Wouxun KG-UVD1P at just under £70 is well worth while (I have one myself) Ebay Example Link

Definitely the Baofeng. I have had one for about 2 months and connect it to a small wilson 70/2 duel band aerial (42 CM long) on a mag mount. Sitting on top of a high hill locally I have worked several people on PMR up to 25 miles away and the mag mount on top of the clothes dryer in an up stairs bedroom gets me easily 10 miles into London. I will be up grading the aerial to a Sirio for better reception for listening on 70 and 2 and transmitting on PMR (1 .1 Meters long) and I am also considering putting up the X50 duel home base aerial in the loft. Hill walker had a 56 mile copy on PMR from onto of a hill in Wales into Sheffield, makes me envious.

I have the Baofeng UV5R, Baofeng H777, Puxing PX-2R and 2X Quansheng TG-UV2 radios. I would personally recommend the Quansheng. £51 delivered from HK. 5W out. 5 bands on it. FM: 88-108MHz (RX), VHF: 136-174MHz (RX/TX), UHF1: 350-390MHz (RX), UHF2: 400-470MHz (RX/TX) & UHF3: 470-520MHz (RX).

The H777 is also quite good on PMR. Very tough, very good build quality. 4w out. Only thing is, it needs to be programmed via PC. After you have got the programming cable, you might have well of spent £5 more and got the UV5R which you can just type the frequency straight in.

Few ideas for you there :)

A correction to Dave's (Estimator) post.
I was just below the summit of Pen y Fan in the Brecon Beacons about 2600ft and I got into Swindon not Sheffield about 70 miles.
Baofeng UV-5R's brilliant radios for the money. :thumb:
:) Is that radio supposed to have smoke coming out of it? :)

I would also recommend the Baofeng UV5R. Great little radio, cheap spares and easy to program.

I run my Baofeng 5r in a number of ways. At home through a homemade dipole to access the gateway, up on a kite with a parrot repeater, or through a J pole, mobile I stick a minimag 2/70cm antenna. On each system it's surpassed my expectations, cracking radio for the money.

Yep what the others say.

A Baofeng UV5R.

Buy the antenna adaptor and the 12v clip on pack for a power supply.

Also buy yourself a programming lead for the Baeofeng.

Program the rig using the CHIRP program.

My wife passed her Foundation exam and i brought he a Beofeng.

Programmed all local repeaters for 2m , 70cm, simplex frequencies and 446mhz channels.

For Twenty Eight and a half quid you won't go wrong

£23 here. ;)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BAOFENG-UV-5RA-Dual-Band-136-174-400-520Mhz-FM-Ham-Radio-Free-UV-5R-A-Earpiece-/151330931373?pt=UK_Mobile_Phones_Communication_Ham_Radio_Receivers_Transceivers&hash=item233c06c2ad

You can sometimes get the cheaper still if you go for an oddball colour.

Mine cost around £20 and has a camoflage pattern.

Since I last posted here, got hold of a chest harness for carrying the baofeng at work as a tree surgeon (tree topping? ;) ) I've also made a homebrew satellite antenna to work through sats with the baofeng with good results. These are good little rigs for little money, ok they're not £300 yaesus, but for starters or outdoors stuff they're perfect
