hi everyone....... i've had this army radio for just over a year now and i have always ran the radio on mains power, but i now want to go portable with it......... but the thing is that i don't have a charger for the battery. this might sound a bit silly but is there another way of charging the battery without damaging it. the battery is a 24v battery at 1Ah. i will be thankful for any advise and any tips with the battery or the radio. |

i'll be honest, i've heard no one on it, but saying that, i haven't got a decent antenna to use with it. i would suggest using a 4 or 6 meter dipole with it or use the ground spike antenna that was mode to use with it. hope that helps |

Don't know much about these radio's but the battery is fairly easy to sort. If they're lead acid (cyclone type) try one of these or similar 24v charger. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Electric-E-Scooter-24-Volt-Battery-Charger-Fits-Lots-of-Small-E-24v-Scooters-New-/290637871854?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Battery_Chargers&hash=item43ab5dfaee Although I think I would personally go for one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/REPLACEMENT-FOR-EA1065-PRIDE-MOBILITY-SCOOTER-BATTERY-CHARGER-/140892145090?pt=UK_Health_Beauty_Mobility_Disability_Medical_ET&hash=item20cdd385c2 The current output of the charger doesn't need to be a consideration as these batteries are normally charged from a fixed voltage of 26.5-28.0v and take what they want. If they're Ni cads then it's more complicated to do it properly as constant current is required with a floating voltage. |

If you have a 351 you can (hopefully) receive quite a few 70MHz amateur frequencies, if there is anyone on there. If you hold a ham licence you can also transmit on this band. I made a 4m (70mhz) dipole up for receive only purposes, and ill be honest it's pretty rare to hear anyone on there. For the money, I'd spend the extra on a prc320 and at least be able to listen to 2-30mhz, maybe even operate on the 11m SSB freqs, or EC I do like the portability of the 320 for portable operations out in the middle of nowhere, something I'm considering during this summer, along with a nice little portable 446 set up mwuhahahaha.

Matt - I'd be interested in knowing how you ran your 351 off the mains - Ive literally just pressed buy on ebay for a 351 - I know the battery may need charging but I'd like to get it in my shack and run off mains (While i build up the strength to carry the damned thing again hahahaha) |

Gru, please. I know that look all too well. It is the look of a broken heart. I, too, have spent many nights, trying to drown my sorrows in guacamole. But we are survivors. There's much more to us than meets the eye, hm? | |

Right, since I first posted on this forum I've achieved my M6 and been able to legally operate the 351. I now have taken (passed) 2e0 so as soon as the bods at ofcom get my call sorted I can turn on the amp as well. I call daily on 70.450 when I'm in the shack, and through a 4m RFD on a pole outside, so pin your ears back, make a contact on 4m!! |
