Hi all,

I'm sure you are all aware of, and ready for the Easter CT Net on the 9th April EASTER NET
and the BP Net the same day BP NET and maybe perhaps the AM event on the Sunday.

Myself and a couple of CT members in the Western Isles (Leurbost2006- Jason and Monty- Allan) are keen to get a little 'subnet' going across the northern reaches of Scotland including the various island groups primarily to see if some more interest can be generated in CB and 11m in these parts and also to see how well we can do with straight groundwave from good locations.

Offplanet (Gary) has acheived some fantastic contacts from the Mendips during previous nets with his set up and has had straight copies upward of 100 miles using his bazooka antenna and 4w FM. This is partly the reason we think this can work up here.

Looking at the map I reckon that if we had participants in Shetland, Fair Isle, Orkney, Western Isles, the Moray coast from Buckie east toward Fraserburgh as well as the northern parts- Caithness and Sutherland etc it would be pretty much ‘line of sight’ stuff across open water (from Orkney). Other areas will hopefully call in to fill up the net and who knows it might turn out to be a winner. It would be a nice little challenge anyway!
Here are some of the rough distances –

ORKNEY to-

LEWIS- 120M CAPE WRATH- 75M DUNNETT HEAD- 24M FAIR ISLE- 61M SHETLAND- 86M

FRASERBURGH- 97M BUCKIE- 91M ISLE OF SKYE 150M

If you are keen to have a go we would love to hear from you. Just a PM or something to let us know you’ll be listening and shouting would be fine. Or if you have any suggestions that would be most welcome too as this is the first time this has been tried and it would be good to get it right :thumb:

Cheers

I should have mentioned that the North Net will run alongside the scheduled CT nets, at the same times!

Cheers :)

Fantastic idea Paul, and if set up correctly i don't see why it shouldn't work (remember to use BIG antennas ;) ) I wish you luck for this and if anything, i am envious, as this sounds like a great idea and would love to be involved if i lived on one of the Islands.....sounds much fun. remember to post the times and frequencies of the said event as you never know how the propagation will play for the day :thumb:

Sounds a superb idea and the distances look achievable even on groundwave - you'll have the added advantage of having a lot of water between the locations, which is ideal ;)

My only suggestions are to test your kit out well before the event and try to get to the best locations you can :thumb:

Get your kit sorted Jason and give it a go - highly rewarding, but, be warned, it's highly addictive too :)

Plenty of info in our eXtreme Team section and feel free to post any questions in there too :thumb:

That's the way Jason - try a few easy locations first and build up to the more challenging ones over a period of time, that way you'll get to try out and experiment with the kit too ;)

Anyway, good luck with the plans for the link-up guys :thumb:

I'm kind of torn on this one because in order to get the line of sight factor required to get into the Western Isles I'm going to have to compromise on height. Here is the place I'm planning on setting up at Yesnaby Have a look at some of the images, a really nice spot.

In the distance you can see the hills of Hoy, the second largest island in Orkney. Hoy has on it the highest hill in Orkney- WARD HILL which I would like to use for an activation in summer. 481M ASL (1580')
From there I'll have the advantage of both height and straight paths in all directions. It's a fair trudge through thick heather to get there but the views when you get to the top are superb. Definitely 'Extreme DX' methinks ;)

Here are some pics I took from there a few years ago from not quite the summit. The early morning fog made me retreat before I got lost. You can see it lifting in some of the photos. VIEWS FROM A HILL. Some other ones of Hoy there too.

Cheers

Paul

With the approaching Sporadic E season you might be surprised what UK stations you may work.

Went out last night to "case the joint" since it was such a nice night. I thought I'd SWL on the way there but couldn't resist a wee reply to 119 div. BOOM straight in, mobile, on the old DV27 lol.

Think it was the same 119 station too talking to Lee (CT100). Certainly heard your call being shouted Lee ;)

Got some local lads too over a greater distance than normal so that was good too, and it was encouraging how clear it was even with the skip running.

AND amazingly, I could make out a couple of 26AT calls in among it all too.

I'm looking forward to the Easter Net me :cb:

Aye there's something of a thrill about a 60 MPH QSO into Madeira :D

119AT014 seems very active these last couple of days, heard him tonight again from home.

On Net day I'm going to bring the bazooka, inverted vee, tank whip and (if I ever get it finished) the spider beam. Should be enough to keep me busy for a while ;)

I reckon the spider will be a big help with groundwave stuff as well as skip.
