Steve, i think it would be great idea to get back to what you refer to as "the good old days". Being able to get reports like that on the move and offer assistance if we were in the position to! I have the CB on all the time when I am on the road, just in case. I once helped a guy out who was broken down, he was on his way to a land rover show and called out, just in case anyone was on. Also be good for those of us who were not on then to experience it! |

Have you watched Whale Wars on Discovery? Japanese whaling vessel had a 'coming together' with a fibreglass catarmaran, and did not stop to offer assistance, but left them sinking. Even if you are having a 'bit of a tiff' at sea, maritime laws should take precedent, and you offer help. The captain of the harpoon vessel failed to respond to the distress calls. Again, strange how different cultures see things |

A local here told me that ch 9 was a caling chanel for truckers just like 19, I always thought it was an emergency ch, well it was 30 years ago in England, sad its all changed but then everybody has a phone, personaly i have a mobile phone but hate using it iam not one of these modern blokes who live just for the phone , just wait when the day comes when the sat falls out , they wouldent know what to do lol Then they might go back to good old CB radio |

I think one problem is that there are some rigs that default to Ch9 when you switch them on, so lazy people can't be bothered to go to another channel. But cannot you blame them if no one is using the CB much these days. The glory days of CB have gone, but I can't see any harm in monitoring Ch9, especially with memory scan and dual watch modes on modern rigs Mobile phone signal isn't 100% coverage (and defo not in my area). When I'm hillwalking I always take a handheld with at least VHF (136 to 174MHz), so at least I have contact with amateur's and marine (and yes I have both licences). I would only contact the coastguard if it was an absolute dire emergency (and thank goodness, I've never had to do that). Please people reading this don't mess around with marine radios.

I only ever heard of ch9 being used once. In 1996 or 97. We had a huge snow storm. I was living 10 miles north of Lockerbie and was snowed into the house with no power for 2 days. When the power came on I switched the radios on straight away. I heard a friend who was a RAYNET member calling for other RAYNET members on 145.5. I answered and he told me he was looking for his father in law who was missing. The A74 was packed full of abandoned vehicles and he must be in one for them. He told me that there were convoys of volunteer 4x4s ferrying these cars occupants back to town and they were keeping touch on UKFM ch9. I relayed messages for a while to help. My mates father in law turned up safe and sound. I moved to Australia in 2000. Here there were two major emergency monitor socs. It was big news here. The isolation, unreliable landlines and zero mobile coverage outside town areas made it very useful. Both organisations are still active. One has given up CB and has its own VHF freqs. It does saftey comms for sporting events etc. Very like RAYNET do. The other organisation carried on as always monitoring CB. They are very low in numbers now and dont achieve much, if anything. But they do like to attend radio rallies in uniform. I have just applied to join a new CB monitor soc. They were formed 5 years ago and monitor UHF CB emergency and truckers channels in SE Queenland. They also have a license for marine and answer distress calls in the bay, which happen now and again. These days there is no need for an emergency monitor, but there is need for an "assistance" monitor. Mobile phone service is good enough now that it covers any emergencies. Anyhow, blah blah. Thought that might be of interest. |

I used to live in Bournemouth. I also had an "aquantance" who was ex RAF. His name was tosser, which was short for Chris...Anyway, the gentleman was a CH9 "monitor" as well as a full blown idiot and adored doing his "putt putt ding ding" accent and others all over ch14 and ch9. it was a bit of fun until they day he called ME up to go out with him to help the other "monitors" find someone. He drops me off at Throop with a bloody great big Harvard handheld with a BELT battery pack he had invented and a sodding great telescopic antenna attached to the handheld, not the original antenna either! Anyway, out of pure curiosity I decided to ask him who or what I was to be looking for in amongst all the old buildings etc. "Oh, sorry John, some geezer has SHOT somebody in Bournemouth and the old bill reckon he might be out this way so, if you see him just give a shout on 09 and I will come and help you".......................I cannot print my answer to him for fear of being banned BUT, the handheld survived the flight through his open drivers window.........And the yomp home helped clear my head from all the EFF words................. |

over winter i monitor ch9 sometimes relaying information regarding road closures to wagon drivers and other possible routes but this day most have gps to sort it out but in the north east people still ask mainly on uk19, personally i think that if you where in an emergancy 19 would be the place to call if your in a built up area because alot of people listen on there. if your out on some hills i would call on uk 9 as you may be surprised who listen on there
