Hi all, I'm thinking of putting an aerial matcher in line to bring the SWR down at the two ends of the 26 -27Mhz bands, it's not too high, about 1:1.9, but I'd like to get it down. Two questions, 1, am I correct in thinking the matcher is put in line between the aerial and the SWR meter, rather than between the radio and the meter, and 2, once tuned, how broad will the tuned bandwidth be, will it need adjusting every few Khz, or can it be left alone unless changing by 50Khz or so? As ever, thanks for any advice,

Yes, the Tuner/Matches goes between the SWR Meter and the aerial. So the Meter "Sees" the tuned aerial system.

BUT if your SWR is under 2, there is a fair chance that you'll gain nothing. There's a loss in using a matcher and you're introducing two more lossey PL259s into the line with the patch lead. So it might end up giving a 1.1:1 reading, but the aerial system will actually be LESS efficient. Also bear in mind that a Matcher doesn't make the aerial system better, per se, it just makes it more suitable to the radio and avoids cooking-the-finals in an amp or whatever.

Also bear in mind that the majority of SWR Meters sold for CB use are a long way from being Calibrated instruments. They're intened for people to be able to tune an aerial by showing comparitive readings (i.e. better or worse with the whip longer or shorter) and to display if the SWR is high (over 3:1) and in danger of causing damage to the XTALs. So if you're basing the need for a Matcher on a reading of 1.9:1, it might even be better than that.

If you had a really REALLY good matcher you could get a 1.1:1 SWR on six-inches of damp string, but it'd still be a bloody awful aerial for TXing.

yea a-bit like saying ive got a siro 827 that tune's up every where even 80m (3.5Mhz) witch makes me PMSL it will work but how efficiently dose it work ! like a good atu so just get the best swr over as wider band as possable

Got you, I had at the back of my mind that all the matcher did was 'absorb' what was reflected, you've just confirmed it and saved me a few bob!

They have their place if your using the same antenna for working different bands but as said at a price,
you cant beat a designated well swr,d antenna.
