Hello all, not sure if this is the right place for this but here goes. Has anybody out there recently got Broadband and Vision from BT Up until about 2 years ago i had this at home but the problem was the the Powerline Adaptor that puts the TV Signal from the Router into the House Mains was causing so much interference to my Radio's that i could not use them. The Signal Meter on all 3 of my Rigs was going right into the +30 dB "Total Wipeout", the only way i could use them was to disconnect the Powerline adaptors. I am now out of my current contract with my Internet Provider and looking at other options, BT Vision / Broadband mainly as i like there price and options but it is the worry about the same problem again. Yes I could go ahead with it but should the problem arise again i am stuck due to being in a Contract which is no good. So the question is if any one has BT Vision / Broadband, is this still a problem or is there a newer upgraded Powerline adaptor that comes with the system that does not cause interference I need a Happy House, where i can use my CB's, the Children can play on the Internet and the Wife can be in front of the TV Watching a Movie through the Vision Box!!!!!!!! |

I haven't heard anyone (here or elsewhere) saying that any new release of PLT Devices shows any improvement in their previous (abysmal) interference levels. As far as anything posted on this Forum site is concerned, the current PLT technology being installed by BT Vision and others still wipes-out the entire HF Bands with "+30" of QRM for a couple of hundred yards. If there is a new version that is quieter we would LOVE to hear about it. |

Hi, Try not to use the powerline adapters if you want to continue using BT vision, I used to have the BT vision a long time ago just after first release but was not using any radio's at the time I just used a long ethernet cable from the router to the vision box and left the adapters in the box and thats where they stayed. You only need the adapters if the bt vision box is sited quite a long way from the router but as mine was in the same room just opposite ends about 30ft you can use a good quality ethernet cable for long distances now without much quality loss I beleive. 73 De Wayne

A couple years ago I was given a pair of PLT`s from a BT engineer that I did a job for ... They were the best thing since sliced bread ...( I did not have any radio`s at the time ) Then Feb this year I started getting into radio`s again... I could not work out why I was getting +30 dB`s of chatter on my rigs ....Until I disconnected the PLT`s.... I will say that the noise was prevailant from 26-29 ish Mhz...( yet to complete a full frequency test ) 160m-15m were unhindered, but forget about 12m-10m....totally washed right out with what I can only describe as fax machine noise... I now have a `Buffalo Ethernet adapter` on its way to me ..so I can smash up the PLT`s with a lump hammer...

I've actually been hearing less of the really bad PLT noise when driving around - might be people moving away from BT Vision, the later adapters are better or I've just been lucky. I've never seen a BT Vision box, but I believe you can just hardwire the connection with twisted pair cable instead of using the PLT adaptors, which is what BT themselves often do when faced with a complaint after OFCOM have investigated a QRM complaint. Be sure to use Cat5e or Cat6 twisted pair network cable with RJ45 plugs - if you put them on yourself, rather than buying a ready-made lead, it's important to follow the correct colour codes or you'll get the QRM all over again (look for wiring code 568a or 568b - either is fine, but make sure they're the same at both ends). Hopefully someone can confirm whether a straight-through or crossover cable is required. |

When i was unfortunate enough to subscribe to the worst ISP on the planet [BT] when i moved home last year [i was a previous Sky customer but sky wasnt on the exchange in my new area at the time] i had the black adapters and even though one of them was only plugged in the mains less than 1 metre away from my radio i had no interference off it at all, As soon as i went "out of band" then the noise would appear, But it was so minimal it was of no concern. Because BT's broadband and vision service was so bad i had the engineers here quite often [they were here more than i had TV and BB connection !] I mentioned the noise from the adapters to the engineer [well more like a walking plank of wood than engineer, who spent most of the time scratching his head and ummin and arring] Which he said he had heard of it but not actually heard it, So he went in his van and got an older white adapter and i showed him the noise level from the black [hardly anything] to the white which he couldn't believe himself [scratched his head even more] Anyway, I'm no longer with the "worst and most expensive ISP" in the UK no more but i still have the black adapters. If anyone wants them, Then you can have them... Edited by Black Spirit, Sunday, 20. November 2011, 21:39.

As its connected to a switched port on the home hub, a straight cable is what you need to replace the PLT adaptors, i.e a standard Cat5e or Cat6 ethernet cable terminated identically at both ends to code 568a/b. If you wanted to connect the BT vision box directly to a laptop for example then you would need a cross over cable. |
