Hi danny, congrats on the new callsign.

Depends on what band or bands you wish to work? 6m, 2m or 70cm or combination of?

best wishes

Dave

As with nearly all aerial installations, size is important if you want maximum performance.

But when you're really only using a 5w hand held in the car sometimes it is better go for sublty and convenience rather than poerformance. I have one of the micro mag-mounts on my vehicle and find it gives me an astonishingly good range from my Wouxum 5w handie - I can regularly hit the GB3WR Somerset Repeater from Cowbridge in South Wales and that's 35 miles. The micro sticks like, err, brown-stuff to a blanket, and has stayed on the roof at 100mph I am sure it would stick to the roof at 100mph, if such a speed were legal ;) . . . it also has the advantage of being virtually invisible from anything over ten feet away.

A bigger aerial will undoubtably give improved performace, but I remain a huge fan if these tiny little things for occasional use.

Hi Danny

Well bigger the better ;)

But a good all rounder is the Sirio HP2070 series. I'm presently using the HP2070R which I got from www.pjbox.co.uk. It's no different is performance to other antennas like the Watson 770 or those very cheap Nagoya's you see on eBay, but the quality of construction is much better. No horrible rusty grub screws. Check out: HP2070R/H and for a smaller one: HP2070

Best Wishes

Dave
