KL 400s Drawing power

Hi my new KL 400s when on a low setting No 4 is drawing 23 amps I am sure it should only be about 11 to 12 amps the swr is low any ideas this on FM SSB is ok.

The manufacturers specs for the KL400 are way off. It needs a 40A psu or bigger to run it safely, or a decent car battery 45ah upward to get the best out of the unit.
I had mine on a 30A psu at 3rd setting with 20w pep in pushing 250w out. It wanted all 30A.
The tx/rx switching will be sluggish if youve not got enough supply current.

Thanks chaps for the help I have just bought a KPO KPS 280 power supply and have just realized how much the KLs draw I used to use a battery but I do like the idea of 13.8 volts when using a psu I wonder if it would be possible to connect an external power capacitor pack to slow down the drain a little on a long over

David, look at how FM works and how SSB works. FM is 100% duty cycle, ie its full power or its off.
SSB is a type of AM but with NO carrier in other words it varies with speech levels. No speech,no RF out.
