SWR Meter, In or Out.

Where i live we have a problem with Crows, yes, the Horrible Black Things that fly.
(Yes i would like to get rid of them)

I recently had two cases of my SWR going very high, after checking Plugs, Joints and Antenna I found out that the Crows had damaged my Antenna and on the second time chewed the Coax. Lucky enough i noticed in time and had no Transceiver damage.

I am now thinking about leaving a SWR Meter in-line as a piece of mind thing in case it happens again.

Now what i would like to know is this a good thing to do.

Some people have told me that it can damage the Transceiver if left in, while others have said it would be fine but expect i very small loss in TX Power.

Should i leave it in, or do i just do the occasional check.??????

I would be looking at getting a decent meter if i was to leave it in (ZETAGI HP1000 TRANSMATCH or similar)

Hi,

Anything you put in line between the antenna and rig will 'consume' a bit of power.
In the case of a vswr meter, it will be very small and insignificant.

From what you said about keeping an eye on your vswr, it sounds reasonable to
keep your meter in line.
Back in the day I stuck a stuffed bird of prey (a snowy owl) up on the roof
and this kept most of the other big birds away.
cheers, adonis

There have been arguments going on for years between the "Leave it in" and the "take it out" sides (Oooh Err Missus  )

As Adonis has confirmed, anything in the line will cause a loss, but it is minimal. Also, the addition of two extra 'lossey' PL259 connections wil raise the SWR a fraction. In my own opinion, the Main Reason for removing the SWR Meter is simply that it offers an additional potential point of failure in most systems. If the aerial is set-up correctly and nothing changes, the it should only be necessary to perform a monthly, or fortnightly, quick check on the SWR.

BUT, if there is a significant risk of a change, like the Crows at your QTH, or Rats/Rabbits/Rodents chewing a ground line co-ax, or a spell of particularly vicious weather, then I think the lower risk is to keep the meter in-line and check that nothing has changed before every session.

Although the sort of SWR meters that are built-in to many CB radios (Galaxy, Lincoln, 3900 etc) are next to useless for getting an accurate reading, they do a wonderful job of allowing a quick check to make sure the aerial hasn't blown down, or the cable been eaten. :D
