Hi Guys, I spotted this the other day http://www.radioworld.co.uk/catalog/super-searcher_watson_rf_finder_counter-p-3086.html http://www.radiopics.com/Otherusefulinfo/Otherusefulinfo.htm#noaawx (go down to scanning tips) , and the idea is that it is supposed to find that frequencies that might otherwise take you a long time to find, and when connected to an appropriate AOR or Icom scanner it puts that scanner on the right frequency to pick up the transminssions. I don't think it would work on my scanner (an Icom IC-R5) but I would like to know what you guys think and what other stuff it would have out there, one problem I have is I would like to find all the taxi firms in my local area, and they don't transmit all the time which means putting it on scan is not an option, also to pick up some other stuff would be good, I have looked at godzilla's list and a few other hundred frequencies and exhausted those through either findng them or that frequenciy is not being used anymore, so to find more stuff would be good, I would also like to be able to pick up the frequency that the aircraft use for waether info, my scanner only picks up FM, WFM & AM. I am asking quite a lot. Cheers Joseph |

I would look round for a good condition used Uniden Bearcat Scanner that has "Close Call". You can't go wrong with those, just turn it on and as soon there is a local transmission it will lock onto it and show you the frequency. |

Yeah I like the idea of getting a bearcat. My icom only has the capabilities of FM, WFM & AM. I know some scanners cover SSB, NFM etc. Does the bearcat cover these and I would like to be able to receive as wider frequencies as possible. Cheers Joseph |

Hi there, just read your bit about the Watson freq finder, I've got the Watson Hunter, probably a cheaper version of the one you looked at, they're great if you're close to the transmiter, I can read freq of a 4w handheld CB at 30ft, but its no good for sitting in the town centre looking for stuff. I have a Bearcat scanner and Its brilliant, much better than my older scanners, I rekon one of their models with close call would be your best bet too. Hope this is of use to you ~ 73s. |

Sorry mate, only just back in the shack, had to pop to the Spar! Got the 785xlt its homebase/mobile, not handheld, but its far better than my others, performance wise. Its only AM FM NFM, no SSB, but unless you listen to the HAM bands its all you need in my opinion. It doesnt have 'close call' either, but I've heard it works well on the models that do have it. The only drawback with all of the Bearcats is being dsigned for the Yanks they do have some frequency gaps, mainly the mobile phone bands. I've not found this a problem with anything I want to listen to though. ALL THE BEST~ ANDY. |
