The stores that sell the KL 400 list it as having a "Current Drain = 12 - 22 amps" |

22 amps @ 13.8 volts gives 303 watts. 66% efficiency = 202 watts out, 25 amps is absolute minimum but I would go higher to be on the safe side |

It does rather say something about "Italian Watts" when the Linears are sold as As you've pointed out, the basic Electronics "Power Triangle" says that 13.8v * 22Amps = 303w, at an impossible 100% efficiency. ![]() |

Id go for a 40+ amp psu. My KL500 has max'd out my 45 amp psu. The needle was twanging on the far side. Lets take of 5 amps for radio. 40amps for amp @ 14.4v (its what I run my PSU at and assuming no voltage drop - highly unlikely) 60% efficiency would give you about 350w. Just apply italian logic to that. 350w now become 700w as it's only half of the signal - ssb always = double ![]() I've had the KL500 reading about 320w-350w on the meter with an FM keydown so assume some innacuracies in the meter and the KL500 should do over 300w FM |

A word of warning about solid state linears. As they warm up, power out will drop a little DO NOT WIND UP THE DRIVE because although your indicated power out will come back, the extra power goes into harmonics of the audio. In other words "Splatter" and you will be very popular (not) I know most people realise the importance of running linears within their limits, there are plenty of people who may not. Just to clarify for anyone out there that believes some of the "Advertising Bull" . . . ![]() Switching from AM to SSB does NOT instantly Double the Power of an Amplifier. True, a SSB signal is (slightly less than) half an AM Signal, but Amplifiers do not work like that. Generally an Amplifier will work at something like 15:1, so you put 10w of AM into it and you get out 150w. The Double-power thing comes from (I think) that fact that most CB type rigs output double the power on SSB than they do on AM/FM, so instead on putting 10w AM into the Linear, the CB is putting 20w SSB in. So 20w in, at 15:1, gives 300w output. This is why they say "150w AM / 300w SSB" Another part of it is that AM and FM carry a greater "load" than SSB. So it might be that the Amp will work to 20w/300w but only on 'light duty' (i.e. Sideband) and if you try using it at that level of power for, say, FM, it would cook itself to charcoal in minutes. As Chris has said, this is what has become known as "Italian Logic" along with "Italian Watts" and "Italian Gain" |
