Pleased you're enjoying the course, Stephen.
Good luck with the exam.
Tip:- When you start your exam, read the paper through CAREFULLY (A comma in the right/wrong place can totally alter the question)
Some questions will leap out at you, answer them first on your second read through.
Keep going through the questions until you've answered them all.
Then read through the lot to check you are satisfied with your answers.

Have got the foundation book in front of me and I am trying to come to term's with the fact that "At the Foundation Licence level it is assumed that it is inappropriate to wire main's plug's" and that seem's pretty easy in my eyes, compared to all the other thing's that need to be learned for someone new to the Foundation Course.

Yes, it amused me that you're not expected to be able to wire a 230v plug until you're ready for the Intermediate (it is one of the Practical Sign-off Exercises for the Intermediate).

But, if you stop to think about it, there is a logic there: The whole purpose of the Foundation Course is to get people interested in radio and get them to understand Basic Safety. That covers basic "TVI" interference, basic legal/licence issues, safe handling of tools and ladders, putting up aerials and so forth. So, by saying that they're avoiding even the fairly-straightforward issue of fitting a mains plug, they're emphasising the Safety aspect yet again. If you also remember that there are some VERY young people that take the Foundation (I know an eight year old that passed) it is a bit like "Blue Peter" saying "Get a grown-up to help you with the craft knife". That can be a bit embarrassing to someone like a hairy-(_|_)ed fitter or an engineer who maybe handles industrial power supplies in his day job, and most of us have changed many plugs in our lives, but it is all about reinforcing that SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY message.

You're very right that a lot of the other stuff that has to be learned for the course is a lot harder to grasp: the frequency range of the human voice; Ohm's Law; colour coding of Resistors; but none of those actually have a health risk.

If you do keep in mind that the Foundation Course has to cater for everyone from seven or eight year-olds, right up to fifty-something crumblies like me, then makes a lot more sense.

There's absolutely nothing in the Foundation Course that would prevent anyone from getting a Pass and their first foot in the door of Amateur Radio.

There's nothing "Rocket Science" in the Training at that level BUT, contrary to what some of the old-school cardigan-wearers might say, they don't hand out the pass Certificate at the Club Door as you walk-in. There is stuff to learn, stuff to be committed to memory and stuff to understand. I do a know a number of people who have failed the Foundation but, here's the Key Point, I have not heard of anyone who has failed it twice.

Most people who fail their first try seem to be victims of over-confidence, or lack of effort, or have simply failed to read the questions carefully. Two (real and actual) examples of those categories:

  • One chap studied the book, had training, did well and spent hours on HamTestsOnline doing 'mock' Foundation Exams. Then failed the actual exam. He'd done so many mock tests that he misread a few of the questions in the actual exam, thinking they were asking the same as in the mock test. The mock tests available online are useful, but don't do them to the point that you almost 'parrot' the answers as the actual exam may ask slightly difference questions on similar topics.
Rule One: Read the Questions carefully. Twice!! Take your time. There really is plenty of time available.
  • A bunch of guys did the Weekend Foundation Course while I was doing the Intermediate. During lunch break they were having a bit of a laugh and watching YouTube vids on the PC and stuff as they couldn't be bother to sit and read the Book, and then they all went out on the Town big-time on the Saturday night . . . . over half failed when they sat the exam the next day. (But they have all subsequently redone the test and passed).
Rule Two: Take it Seriously. Read the Book until you're almost sick of it, and turn up for the Exam WITHOUT the hangover :X
