Sorry to say, but this is the nature of switchmode supplies, The way they work does actually generate noise, Some switchmodes are quieter than others in this respect, Generally the better made and more expensive supplies are quieter, You could try winding some of the mains lead around a ferrite ring or two, try and place the ferrite rings as close to the power sipply as you can, also try a ferrite ring on the actual power lead to the radio, Other than trying this theres not much externally you can do to combat the noise, if this doesnt reduce the noise to a lower level the next step would be to go Inside the supply ...... But there are some very high voltages in there so i wouldnt recomend this in the interests of safety. Mark |

I've a switchmode that'll give S7 on all channels - I can pretty much use it to calibrate signal meters Like Mark says, some are better than others, but try ferrites on all the cables and keep the thing as far away from the radio and antenna as possible. Some switchmodes have a control to move the noise away - like the 22amp Watson Power-Mite NF I reviewed recently. Having a control to move QRM is something of an admission that switchmodes produce noise

I have the bigger brother to that psu and I have found it produces no noise for me. I've never had to adjust the dial on it its just been quiet BUT I will agree that some switchmodes produce massive amounts of noise. |

I should add, the switchmode that gives me the S7 is a Watson W-10SM 10A, not the Power Mite. The Power Mite has probably been the best switchmode I've tried so far and the bit of QRM I had during the review was cleared with a ferrite on the power lead to the rig - I've not had to use the noise filter control since either The Watson W-10SM, on the other hand, has been a lousy PSU - perhaps it's fine on other bands, but on 11m, it's a noise monster. |
