It's still used and, I believe, has a fairly strong following.

I personally can't get the hang of it as it feels a bit like "Cheating" :~ to use an IP connection in place of Radio Waves. But like so many variations of this hobby of ours, a lot of people use it and enjoy it.

But, to offer a balance, I can't get the hang of CW either, but that's just because I'm too thick, or too lazy, to learn the Code.

I used to use it, and lot interest very quickly. Like Steve, it just doesn't feel like radio in its true form. I believe it is still quite widely used though but it's definitely not an area of the hobby I will be re-exploring.

Just a thought though ... a mate of mine used to use it via his Android phone, so technically, you can use it via good old fashioned radio :)
Although, if you use it whilst on a 3G data connection as opposed to a public or private wi-fi one, you'll eat up your data allowance.

I can't get my head around that  . . . Would that be the ultimate evolution of the "Radio Telephone" maybe?

Radio, being wireless tele-communication, can be accessed through the wired telecommunications network to access the Internet and IP . . . or you could use your wireless telecommunications equipment (Android mobile) to connect to the (primarily wired) internet network in order to connect to someone using wireless tele-communication (Amateur Radio Equipment).

It has all become wayyyyy too clever for its own good... Bring back "Button A / Button B" Posted Image

Yes it is Jim, you're quite right. But we don't consder using the telephone to be Amateur Radio even though that is communicating too.

I do NOT mean to "knock" or discredit Echo link and I think it does a fantastic job for people in places where they cannot raise an aerial or have terrible problems getting signals in and out. The reason I personally don't like it is quite simply because TO ME it is apparently little different to Skype, or using an Internet Chat-Room.

I used to use chat-room technology a lot about fifteen years ago and the Room I was running progressed on to using Voice (and later Video) for chatting too. I get the same feel out of Echo-link as I used to get out of using Voice on the PIRCH programs.

Trouble with fetching back buttons A & B is you'd have to fetch back the old pennies to go with 'em. At least you got 240 for a quid, not just 100 !

Ok then so the "echolink" debate is still as it was back then.. :D
I used it a fair bit a few years ago but not on the PC.

My mate had it set up at his house linked into a 2mtr system so that I could connect via my mobile 2mtr set and then "dial in" this way I could have contact with a friend in Holland whilst driving around in the local area here..

I have just downloaded it for the iPhone and it's just weird haha
Even though I am quite enjoying a listen to a few repeaters worldwide I find it strange, I have not transmitted as of yet...

I suppose that if I need to get in touch with a mate in Holland, NZ or Australia it could come in handy.

Don't get me wrong, I TOTALLY agree with that line and I think it is a Damn Clever System.

I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to a Station in the Australian Outback who was chatting to a Station in Devon via the Somerset GB3WR 2m repeater while I was sitting in my motor in Cowbridge (South Wales) waiting for the XYL. Listening to an Aussie in the Outback, via an eighteen inch aerial plugged into a hand-held in Wales, is impressive HOWEVER it is done!!

Yeh it's strange and not really my cup of tea but pretty interesting to explore.
Might have a look into setting up a link at some point.

Like you say pretty cool though in a way regardless of the how and what.

I use Echolink from time to time. It comes in handy when I want to talk to a friend of mine on the other side of the country who doesn't have much privileges on HF. Unfortunately, there are no echolink nodes within my coverage area, so I do have to resort to using my computer to make contacts, which I find to be strange.

Strange it is....

I had a long-ish QSO with a few people on a Dutch repeater last night..
I logged in on the phone to have a listen more than anything and the owner seen me so I got shouted.

Had a nice chat but cr@p it's weird and I feel daft speaking on the phone as if I was on the radio.. No accomplishment at all...
When the G5 goes back up I am going to login to let them know I am there and try and have a chat on say 80 meters..
Still cheating in a way but hey...

I have echolink installed on my pc, had a few contacts, but not really used it much ,not really radio & it feels like something is missing in the qso, but if you are restricted with aerials or power it could be useful.

Gor Goodness' Sake don't ever walk down the road with the phone to your ear while using EchoLink...

Can you IMAGINE the looks you'd get if people heard you saying stuff like, "CQ CQ. Mike Whisky Zero Papa Charlie Tango. Affirmative. You're five by nine. Would you like to QSL?" and all that.

It'd be even worse than the classic, "Yes dear. I'M ON THE TRAIN. Yes. That's right. No, I said THE TRAIN"
