Wayne these supplies look like switchmodes. Normally the Linear supplies ' the ones with big transformers' are generally bigger in physical size and also a lot heavier, personally i prefer the linear type, i find that switchmodes due to the way they work can generate noise on certain bands, and ive enough noise as it is. any supply capable of 25 amps would run the 440s without any problems. If your going for a different supply try and find out if it has ' over voltage protection' built in, this can save your expensive radio should anything go wrong with the supply such as pass transistor faults in a linear supply. The Watson in link 2 is a transformer type - I've got one and it works Ok, but the fan is as loud as hell I've no experience of the other two. |

I can only add ot the confusion I'm afraid. Like Mark, I'd go for a Transformer type if you can. Many (most?) switch-modes are going to be OK, but we've heard horror stories on these forums of HUGE RF Noise from a few Switch-mode types. Here's anther two for you to add to your watch list: Kenwood PS430 TenTec 963 |

i use the watson w-25am which is not switch mode it runs a ft480,ts140,cb multiband radio,s at the same time has not been turned off now for about 4 years on all the time ?value for money good mine runs silent clean voltage never hums or singalongs on ssb one issue is to check the output voltage with a meter as the voltage knob at 12.oclock is not 13.8 it was less so correct the position and alls fine .. added bonus is dc30a output,,lighter socket at 10a,,clip terminals at 6a |

I've had a watson 25AM for about 13 years. Its now been relegated as it wasn't reliable. The voltage would wander all over the place and out of the box they are noisy as hell. Sure changing the fan quietens them down a lot but I just had enough of mine. Still 13 years isn't bad! |

Ive used a Manson EP-925 for years, New there about £100 second hand you would expect to pay half that. Although the fan can be a tad noisy, the supply works very well, Old technology that works well, just how i like it. Just to let you know link two didnt work this morning at 6.45am, i thought all three were switchmodes ........... switchmodes..... the very name sends ' Shivers' down my spine.... LOL Mark |

Cheers Mark at that price I would do better to buy new rather than spend upto £100 on a used psu. Many thanks for all the advice. 73 Wayne

Always opt for a linear power supply "large transformer" less interference and longer lasting, although i have heard people say there switch mode works fine.. I would always use a linear power supply with radio equipment, you are probably looking at a 20-25 amp power supply if you are going to be running this hf rig at full power from time to time, its always easier to go with a bigger power supply than what is actually needed. Think the specs on this rig say it uses 21 amps max current draw on full whack ssb. Have a look on ebay for a used one, there are bargains to be had |
