Hi guys,

I'm after a bit of advice / opinions please..

I'd like to buy a new radio for the car, something with full HF + VHF/UHF.. Icom IC-706Mk2 or Yaesu FT-857D

Two questions..

1. Is there anything else I should be considering?? (similar price)

2. Are there any issues with either I should be aware of??

Thanks in advance..

Dave.

The 857 is the cheapest, the 706mk2 is good. The Ic7000 looks awesome.
I quite like yaesu so I've got an 857 in the car and an 897 at home.
My choice will be biased on my purchases but if you've got a nice wedge of spare cash the ic7000 looks nicer and performs better than the 857. I'm not sure if it is worth twice as much, thats up to you but if it was a money no object then the IC7000 would be on my dash instead of the 857

The advice I was given may years ago, was spend much more time thinking about the antenna than the radio when mobile. What bands are you going to operate mobile? Make sure you get your HF antenna really well connected to chassis & don't waste time on a mag mount for a permanent HF mobile station. As it just will not have the ability to function below 10 meters & even there will be a big compromise.
If you are spending several hundred pounds on a permanent HF mobile station, then spending time on the wire that gets your signal in & out is time well spent.
Also for HF it may be worth thinking about a method of lifting the capacitance close to the feed point of the antenna, as small verticals should be low C & the closer to the antenna you do it, the less RF you loose in the feedline. This only cost a few pounds & is well worth the pennies.
The biggest advance in radio technology EVER, was the invention of the credit card.

Just be aware with the Icom that the older "non G" models of the 706 didn't have 70cm. They're HF/2m only, so they seem cheaper but it is the 706 Mk.IIG you'd want.
The FT-857 is a bit smaller if that's a factor.

As Chris has said, the successor to the 706 is the 7000 which is a LOT of radio, but pricey.

Thanks for the feed back guys.. It's all much appreciated.

The IC-7000 is an awsome bit of kit but well out of my price range, as Ron has said I need to leave some cash for a quality installation job and a antenna or two!!

I'm probably going to be spending most of my time on 20mtrs through to 10mtrs but as always it depends on where the action is!!

VHF/UHF is nice to have and seems to be almost standard on any newish radio, but thanks for the heads up on the older 706's Steve..

Think I will go and have a play with a 857 and see how I get on with the menu system..

Actually I think choosing the radio is the easy bit.. Running the 30amp cable through the bulkhead is going to be the nightmare!!!

I've had a Original 706 (1995/96) model in the Van for past 3 years +, with coffee, fags, dust etc chucked at it, and it's still going stronge, One thing worth considering is, as the 706 's have , is "UP /DOWN" Frequency Control on the Fist mic, less hasle when driving, keeps your eyes on the road, and also like the "listener" says, Aerials are you main concern, when mobile

I have a Gutter mount on back of the Van, so a Reasonable ground plan, and a Permanant Installation

Thanks for all the advice guys..

Well had a play with an 857 and ended up getting one :D

Can't believe how small it is sitting on top of the DX-SR8 while I learn how to use it..

Anyway 30 amp wires found their way through from the battery to the passenger foot well so now just got to add some fuses, decide were to mount the radio, tidy up the routing and then start thinking about antenna for VHF/UHF & 20mtrs etc (10mtrs is sorted)..

Anyone had a good experience with a ATAS 120A??

I use the Yaesu 857D with the Atas 120 and i think its a fantastic combination worked into south africa the other week when sitting static mobile in Edinburgh as well as many other countries
I got fed up using differant antennas for differant bands trust me you wont go wrong in getting an Atas as long as you can get a good ground on the mount it will work fantastic.

Thanks John,

What sort of mount are you using with it?? I've got a Comet RS-730 Nevada

Mounted on the hatch but I'm not sure it will take the 120A...
