New digital EME record on 2 metres

Allan, ZS1LS, and Jeremy, W7EME, in Hawaii established a new SARL EME record on 144 MHz.

The contact took place at 20:20 UTC on 3 August 2011 using the JT65b mode and covered a distance of 18 383 km.

The contact was established during a small window close to moonset in South Africa and only 0,7 degrees of moonrise in Hawaii.

Signal reports varied between -26 dB and -31 dB at Allan's QTH. Jeremy copied Allan at -21 dB on the night before but Allan could not copy him.

WSJT is a computer program used for weak-signal radio communication between radio amateurs. The program was initially written by Joe Taylor, K1JT, but is now open source and is developed by a small team. The digital signal processing techniques in WSJT make it substantially easier for radio amateurs to employ esoteric propagation modes, such as high speed meteor scatter and moon bounce.

Thats quite awesome when you think about it BUT it would be impossible to actually have a voice QSO like that. You wouldn't be able to detect a voice let alone know what it was saying.

I'm all one for seeing how far things can go and this really is immense but I kinda can't see the point.

Coupled with the fact that if they put the same ERP and beam setup onto 20m or similar they'd have an epic QSO.

I was kinda "meh" with speaking to Radio Arcala last night. They've got a mega mega setup that we could only wish for if we won the lottery and to be honest the audio wasn't amazing, the signal was okay. I prefer speaking to Roger!

Its not only digital modes that you can moon bounce with you can do it on voice as well. it depends what you want from radio, I suppose some may say whats the point of a HF set up, with HF its to easy and lets be honest it is really easy compared to this.

I love the idea of applying for a Notice of Variation for a GadZillion Watts for a bit of E-V-E bounce. . . . :D

With a five minute delay though, the conversation would be a bit stilted.

I was reading about 6 meter EME a few weeks ago. A lot of the old B licensees were doing "moonbounce" as it was known then back in the late 70's early 80's. They were dead easy to spot Massive ground mounted arrays of beams aimed at the sky. And I guess if you can do it on 2 & 6, then 4 meters must be EME capable too.
The biggest advance in radio technology EVER, was the invention of the credit card.

On the subject of moonbounce. If you have been to Knights emporium at Kirton Lindsey, look across the road. That 20 ft dish is for moonbounce on 23 cms
