so what's the score people? as i've said in the subject of this thread, the next intermediate course at my local society is next year and that is FAR too far away in the distance.

i've enguired about learning via email but drew a blank. obviously, i'd need the intermediate learning book but how do i go about taking the exam? has anyone actually attempted any level of licence solo?

The Intermediate does involve a number of practical elements, even more than the Foundation. So it is not actually possible to study at home then just turn up somewhere for the Exam as there would be no way to do the "Tune a VFO" or the "Build a project" type of assessments.

There are places that do the Intermediate over two weekends, with a month gap between the two for the Project Build. The only one that springs to mind anywhere remotely 'doable' from Essex is Newbury. You could maybe sign-up for that and stay overnight in a Travel Lodge or something for the weekends?

You can learn enough from the Book to be able ot pass the exam. Like the Foundation, just about all you'd need to know for the questions is in the "Intermediate, Building on the Foundation" publication. Perhaps you could talk to a Club about just supervising you on the practicals and providing an exam and learn the rest at home? There is also a possibility of the Annual Exam at the RSGB - I know you can sit the Advanced Exam at their annual conference, but whether that also applies to the Intermediate is another question . . .but if you could have the assessments signed-off by a club maybe you could sit the formal questions there.

I did the Advanced Exam "Solo". As it is such a wide sylabus and can cover so many topics I don't think it is possible to offer a 'simple' Training Programme for the Advanced/Full. What some places do at that level (Newbury is again one of them) is offer "Revision Sessions" where you get the chance to meet with the Instructors and ask questions about elements that you can't get a grip on, or don't quite understand. The Advanced/Full differs from both of the other exams in two ways: firstly it is ONLY the Exam, there is no practical assessment at all; and second, even if you had memorised the entire "Advance, the Full Licence" Book or were allowed to take a copy into the exam with you, you wouldn't necessarily pass. There are question that just plain don't get a mention in the book as you're expected to have "gone and learned radio" than memorised a book.

My tutor described the three levels as:
  • At Foundation you have to demonstrate some basic skills and have learned some data/facts.
  • At Intermediate you have to be able to demonstrate that you understand and can apply some more in depth radio knowledge, both practically and theoretically
  • At the Full level you have to use your knowledge and understanding of radio to answer the questions.
