I was thinking about the new antenna I've got and comparing it to what I've gone from and to and now from again. First off I started with a Watson 50, a dinky little thing. Then I got a Watson 2000 - quite large, and now I've got a MA-6000 which is basically a Watson 510N but a tad bigger and slightly better built (apparantly). I love playing with the calculator so worked out the coax loss over my run, I didnt add in the adaptors or the duplexer but the figures below are roughly what power should be coming out of the antenna. The gain of the antennas is dbi and the figures are all watts ERP. ![]() I just need to get it up on the chimney now. Got to wait a couple of weeks as I need the chimney pointed as I don't think its in a fit state to have a 5.4m long antenna strapped onto it. |

You can get the X510N's for about £90 on ebay and I only paid £110 cash yesterday for the 6000. I've got the gainmaster for 12m-10m and a 40m horizontal loop at about 8.5m for 40m/20m. The ma6000 is significantly heavier than the x510n. The 510's are 2kg, the 6000 is 2.7kg. I just hope the extra weight gives it a bit more strength up in the air. The guy did say he had heard of a few 510's blowing apart and that the 6000 seems a lot stronger in his testing. oh and it should be suitable for 135mph winds too. Edited by ChrisC, Monday, 18. Chris, the next step is to get your coax losses down. At our home we have a Diamond X700 (Next one up from the X510, bloody long and whips about in the wind) with 20 metres of coax to our shack in the lounge. I bought 15 metres of Ecoflex 15 and took out all but 5 metres of RG213. The radio on 70cms now sounds perkier. RG213 has a loss of 17dB @ 500 MHz over 100 metres Ecoflex15 has a loss of 6.7 dB @ 500 MHz over a run of 100 metres RG58 has a loss of 39 dB @ 500 MHz over a run of 100 metres |

I've got about 10/12m of Westflex 103 up there direct from the antenna to the radio - apart from a duplexer. Thats got a loss of 7.5db per 100m at 432mhz. I don't think it's worth the extra cost going to the ecoflex. It might be but I don't think I can currently justify it. Edit. I don't think I can justify possibly £80 more on coax considering I've already got the westflex up in the air. Edited by ChrisC, Tuesday, 19. July 2011, 07:42.

Yup, £/DB it made the most sense to me. I noticed a big improvement when swapping from RG213 to Westflex 103 and all the loss calculations are based as accurately as possible |
