yes have used 4m and not impressed at all used it for 2 years on and off
must have spoke to 1./2 dozen users...and when you do make contact
they treat you as a tresspaser ? old farts with a big attitude the worst band
on any ham band ,, DONT BOTHER WITH IT,, unless you got freinds that can
get on there with you and make a sked weekly and chat among yourselfs

Well I'm planning on buying some gear next weekend. I haven't bought any radio kit for a couple of weeks and I was planning on getting on 4m a while back but decided against it. If there is some cheap gear at the rally I'll be getting on air in a week or two.

Four mtrs is a great band!

If your after contact after easy contact then NO, but if you like radio with a real 'feel' to it then 70Mhz is the band. When I was active on Four it was only on FM using a AKD 4001 (25w) and vert antenna.I would have loved to venture on to SSB with a nice compact beam but I had 6 mtrs for that.

Still not much equipment 'on the shelf' but there is more these days to get you going. The band can be very quite for very long periods with short bursts of activity (like 6 and 10).

Have a look at:

My XYL and I use 4 metres. Now Lucy is a wheelchair pilot with a severe speech problem, she finds 4 metres VERY friendly and treat her with the respect that someone who has passed all 3 exams deserves (even if they struggle with her voice) while on 2 she has had some people taking the p*ss .
We have several Philips/Simoco FM1000's a Spctrum transverter and a Wouxon handy.
Antennas are Sirio CX4-68, Sandpiper 3 ele delta beam (for horizontal), sawn off DV27 for mobile and a Mydel (Garex?) 20" centre loaded whip for the Wouxon

I was on 4 mtrs back last year using a converted PMR radio, initially i had high hopes for it but after a few months of not really hearing any local stations just the odd very weak voice from time to time i decided it wasnt for me, it may have been down to the area or just lack of users in the locality, but to say it was quiet is a understatment.

2 mtrs from here is also very quiet same goes for 6 mtrs, Unless theres a bit of a lift on, then they all come out of the woodwork.

Cheers for all the reply's lads.......Have been having a listen to 4m using the Icom 706 and my tribander antenna (picks up 4m okish)

Very quiet indeed...same 3 mobile stations keep cropping up time and time again, the same stations that keep trying to promote 4m when on 2 m, lol

Stephen and Brian, some pics of your 4m set ups and antennas would be appreciated..many thanks Mark M6MBA

I have most of 4 meters programmed into my scanners & find there is a fair amount of activity. But most of it seems to be away from the calling frequency & by that I mean you get planned regular QSO's on the same channel they always operate on, the same as you get on 2 meters.
The biggest advance in radio technology EVER, was the invention of the credit card.

Nope! I kinda couldn't be bothered.
It might be another avenue I'll explore when I'm working from the new office. From what I gather there is a fair bit of activity around this way but I've just never bothered!
