Er of course - looks around sheepishly - I can happily show them the noise on the 590. Its not as if I'm TXing there. The 590 can't transmit there anyway. I wasn't planning on putting the amplifiers away either. They're out of line just sat on the desk. I've tested my other laptop charger and it seems silent on all of the band so I've taken that round there. If the chap wasnt leaving his laptop on 24/7 downloading torrents I might have a bit of rest but noooo ![]() Hopefully when he gets back this afternoon he can swap chargers over and I'll get a drop in noise! I can show them the noise on 10m though if they wanted. I'm licensed up there so thats okay. Edited by ChrisC, Saturday, 9. July 2011, 10:27.

I think it would be a much better idea to do that. Technically speaking you're not even supposed to listen to unauthorised transmissions. So SWLing the T5 on an unmodified TS-590 is a breach of your Licence, even if the radio is incapable of TXing on that band. I'm not quite sure what the legal position would be regarding listening to FM Mids/UK on it though, but as they are legit frequencies then I would imagine that SWLing them is legit too regardless of what you're using to listen. Do be prepared to answer a question about the Amps, even if they are off-line. The chances are that the guy may see them and, let's be fair, why else would they be there? The bloke isn't an idiot. Someone recently mentioned an Ofcom visit to sort out some QRM issues and the Ofcom chap noticed a Marine band radio in the shack. Fortunately the Op actually had a Martine Licence he was able to produce. It is technically illegal to listen to any band that you're not licenced for, unless it is Public Broadcast (CapitalFM, Radio 1 Etc) or specified 'hobby radio' like the amateur bands. So just have an explanation to hand.... Something like "I'm storing them for a friend while he moves house" would at least give the Ofcom chap a feasible response he could accept. |

Second that, I have heard sooo many stories about visits from OFCOM and stuff that was not in use but still removed by them, if ever the day comes when I need OFCOM, I shall take NO chances, shack will be stripped of anything that is even slightly dubious. it's that old saying, c'mon you know the one lol.. Ahh torrents eh, I'm sure I don't know what they are

Totally agree. Why take the chance? I have a pair of MAXON SL55s knocking about that I hope to reprogram to 70cm or a Business Channel (IF I get hold of a program cable) . . . but they'd be spirited away too 'just in case' .... and the Galaxy fixed to the underside of the desk would be in the cupboard rather than risk the whole "It's for 10m Honest Guv" conversation. In fact, even the widebanded Dynascan PMRs would be out of sight and I would make a point of ensuring the radio didn't go straight to 27.555 when powered-up, like happened to a certain gentleman in Billericay. (and I use the term "Gentleman" loosely of course )

All understood and accepted. I'm okay with having the 590 show the cb bands as it is legal to listen there on it. As for the amps, unless they are on and in use then they have no right to take them away. Sure the little red one is a bit obvious but its like having a car that can go over the speed limit, just because it can doesnt mean it will. |

I think I will "tidy" the shack before they come but they will still see the cb frequencies on the rig if i flick through the bands. |

Chris, ive had a few visits from Offcom over the years mainly due to TVI problems, There decent people, Although they have the power to cart off anything that looks un-toward or at least start asking awkward questions, Its not worth leaving anything out that shouldnt be on show. while they are there they may want to test your radio, its a possibility, there not allowed to actually touch your radio, they will ask you to put the radio on and tune it to the freq you normaly use and adjust the power to the level you normally use, or thats how its always gone for me, things like low-pass filters on show do score browny points, so does a logbook even though its not a legal requirement these days. it shows your a responsable person in there eyes. Well I've got two low pass filters at the ready. Both are rated only at 150w which isn't a problem with my 50w limit but they might look odd with a big amp so yeah ![]() I think the fact I've found most of the noise should help but I'm not happy with my noise floor so I think getting them out might get something done. even if me swapping the charger over a second time does help and clears up most of the noise I still want them to have a look around with their kit. |

I had the same trouble with a CRT TV - I tried ferrites on the power lead and the TV aerial coax, but no joy. With people pretty much giving CRT TV's away these days, I junked it and picked up a better Phillips TV for free, which fixed the problem immediately
