Well I am thinking how many people use PMR at 0.5 watt? Or do they use more than that example 5 watt? I am thinking of getting a pair of Puxing 440-470 range units, as I find 0.5 watt is no real use at all in a built up area. Yes I am fully aware of the law and the 0.5 watt. How ever are there many that use PMR at 5 watts? Is this PMR band monitored, for over 0.5 watt? TIA, Mike. |

Simply put no one will know. You will have a bigger antenna for a start with more gain and 10x the power. I'm sure they'll suffice. Just make sure the SWR isnt way out on the dinky antenna otherwise that power will be wasted. You can get quite a long distance with a standard PMR and a decent setup - as in er, a Yaesu FT897D and a Watson W2000 antenna on your chimney - or so I've heard |

LOL Hi Mike. As Chris has said, although we obviously couldn't POSSIBLY condone anyone using an illegal amount of power, or an illegal aerial on a PMR Radio (they're only legal when used with that dinky built-in aerial, and the 0.5w as you know), it is almost impossible to know that someone is using a chunk of excess power. OK, if you're making 50 miles contacts on a PMR in built-up aera, then it looks a bit suspicious, but it'd take some serious effort and kit to actually track down what power you're using. If I accidentally put my Yaesu onto the PMR freqs at 100w through my colinear, with gain, then, errr, it'd be a bit obvious perhaps . . .but 5w on a handheld? Not a chance. |

I remember a friend saying he was playing with around 100 watts of SSB on PMR 446 several years ago. And I know he said he & a group of friends were having good results. It was better than 70CM I seem to remember being told. I also remember him saying something along the lines of., "& what are the other users going to do? report us for doing exactly what they are? Everyone uses more power than they should & how do you word a complaint that your power level of 20 times what it should be is being interfered with?." |

If you can get 100w out of the 897 on 70cms you're doing bloomin well! ![]() I've found mine will only do 20w and on "70cms" thats more than enough to blow others out of the water ![]() I think 20w output ( - ) coax loss ( x ) antenna gain = ~60w ERP in my situation. Winner winner chicken dinner |

LOL Just shows how infrequently I use 70cm at the QTH! . . . . like virtually never. I have never heard any traffic on 70 around here, nor even any life on the 70 repeaters in range, so I pretty much stopped going there before the 897 was installed in the Shack. I check 70 out when mobile from time to time, but it seems to be a really quiet band in these parts.

Well I can easilly hit the cheltenham or gloucester 70cm from my QTH with 2-3watts. Quite good imo. 70cms is picking up around here. I'm trying to get more people on there. |
