I think, to save wiring the car etc, that I am going to head down the battery route for running a linear. What do you peeps use? There are so many out there, and some are bloomin expensive, it's hard to know what to plump for. I am likely to run the rig of the car still, but the linear off the battery. I have, for a temp solution got access to an old car battery, but it's not min so i'll have to end up sorting out my own. Rob |

As said in the other Thread, you really do NOT want a 25lb lump filled with acid inside the car (passenger cabin) when moving, just in case of an accident. If you really do want to take that option then for goodness sake make sure the battery is well secured in the boot whilst driving. |

Should have been clearer in that I meant for the battery to be as a power source when parked as a static mobile station. Battery will be transported in a decent box, tied down in the boot when in transit. I just wondered what capacity and makes people use. There are hundreds out there. |

I think you might like something like this, the wire coiled round the top is the charging lead, some plug into the Aux 7 pin socket (on the tow bar if fitted) or you wire a ciggy lighter plug into the rear of your car, hope this help's.. Pic' is a tad small sorry , its a battery box with charging lead- ADMIN - - Pic now displayed at 3x enlarged size

by the time you've messed about with a battery etc. you may as well park, then get some pre-prepared cable with croc clips on the end and couple to the battery under the bonnent Job done. and cheap. Chris |

I do take a spare battery with me when I operate /P but not to power a amp or whatever, I run all that off the car battery. I use the spare to jump start the car when I have not been paying attention to my battery voltage By installing some decent, fused, power leads for your amp AND radio, being aware of actual 'on-air' time when using power and starting the car from time to time you should have little to worry about. Do it properly. Don't mess around with flying leads on croc clips etc. This is the very same job I will be doing tomorrow after work. I intend to run a pair of 8mm cables from the battery in to the glove box were I will install a secondry fuse box. From there I can power all manor of items. ALL leads will be correctly fused. I've only ever been 'stranded' once because of a flat battery. Hence the spare now. |

Sometimes (not all) running the radio off of the car battery and the amp off of a stand alone battery can cause problems because the DC source going to the amp is "floating" since it's only source to vehicle ground is through the coax ground. Depends on the radio/amp combination from my experience. Your plan to use the spare battery to jump start the vehicle if you accidentally run the main battery down would be the safest way to go. Are all of your vehicles over there still + to frame? I have not kept up with it since I got rid of my last Jag some 20 odd years back. |

Every car I've owned has always been "Negative Earth" (so - to Frame), from the first car I ever owned (a 1966 Ford Cortina) to the current ones (an 07 Jeep and an 08 Merc). |

OK, I did not know. You know + earth is actually the correct way to do it. All of the cars I ever owned that were + earth never suffered from any type of corrosion at the battery terminals, where - earth will always have this problem. Think about it.

Thank you for your kind words but to be fair that is what this Forum should be about, helping each other out. Not meaning to hi-jack your thread but I've had a pig of a day with my installation! However the hard bit is over so ALL I have to do tomorrow is fit the radio! Getting my power cables through the bulk head was a nightmare. No grommets to be seen and I was unable to get a clear idea about wiring/pipework to drill my own. After taking my dogs for a walk I had a rethink. After removing the N/S splash gaurd I was able to get a little bit of access so I could run my cables in. Job done, almost. The thing is I do this for a living (Auto-Elec/Fitter) but my own car as been a pain. Hope your install goes a lot easier than mine. |
