It's strange what you can remember, but I can hear the clicking sound even now. I was in my mid teens (& that's a long time ago.) I sitting in my bedroom when this regular click became apparent to me, it was coming from over there. I walked across & realised it was my AR88 clicking away, in fact when I looked in the half light of this summers evening I could see a bloody great spark jumping from my longwire to my earthwire. No damage was done, but the lesson was learnt. Big lengths of wire make very good collectors of static, even if there is no lightning within miles. A visit to a family friend who was an amateur resulted in another lesson, as I was helped to build a simple balun & bleed off system for static that also served as a lightning arrestor in the event of a bigger charge hitting my antenna (It was designed to fry & melt under anything but the smallest of charges) & I was told why they made good sense. I later with help also built a SWL ATU that added to my station. Ediyed to change old to told.

Hi Ron, Any more info on how you designed the balun/bleed off system? Static levels here are really high and I have to be careful just opening and closing my car door. RCA AR88D was my first receiver, heaviest but nicest piece of equipment I ever owned. CJ, any images on the spark plug arrester? paints a 1000 words.... cheers, adonis |

sorry can not send a picture but it is very easy one sparkplug attached to tx wire near the house with a length of insulated wire connected to top off s/plug put s/plug into a copper tube cut slots in pipe to clamp up with j/clip then push it in to the ground the static will jump the gap to ground? static will allways jump the shortest way to ground ,try not to close the spark plug gap you will tx into the ground other wise?

Another way is to use a antenna 'T' piece connector, I couldnt find a photo so i did this diagram. http://i925.photobucket.com/albums/ad100/madmark42/Plplugsparkgap.jpg Use stiff wire for the electrodes and put some heatshrink sleeving over the cetre one to stop it shorting to the outer /ground of the plug, once made fill the plug with silicone to stop water ingress, the spark gap should be around a millimeter or so. Thanks Mark & CJ. I have a better idea on what to do. Static is something I've never had to worry about but my Cushcraft R6 suddenly went open circuit (I suspect the RFC choke) and/or the choke windings. cheers, adonis |

I use A bleed resisistor system, easy to use & it is more reliable than a spark plug which relys on the earth wire being the better earth & thats not always the case the best earth could be be via the radio.![]() The above image is an untidy , but was taken from http://vandeweyer.wordpress.com/2011/05/22/kite-antennableeder-is-ready/ |

Hi Ron, Thanks for the link, this looks very do-able. I have most of the items apart from a strong aluminium box. I can salvage a gas discharger from one of my antenna switches. cheers, adonis |

Just had a quick read on static bleed release with lots of interesting but conflicting info. . I'll use either the desgn in previous post (minus the gas discharger) or the T piece suggested by Mark. Either method should be sufficient for my needs. do-able bleeder link is here: http://www.oh7ug.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=344:static-charge-bleeder&catid=2:general cheers, adonis |
