Baluns do lower background noise slightly, they also give you an opportunity to move the antennas feed point as far from the house & electrical noise as possible & again this helps to lower noise levels. It then gives you an earth point where the antenna is fed & everything you can do to provide a good earth helps, but don't forget to include the cost of coax when concidering a balun. I have always used baluns as personally I find they work better & thats how I was taught to do things. So maybe it's just habit. But I have also always used an atu when SWL'ing as well & I always make sure I have lots of earthing points in place. I also make sure I put an electrical bleed point in place for any static that builds up on my wire & the baluns a good place to do that, as even on a hot summers evening static can build up a fairly good charge on a wire & as for during a thunder storm, even if no lightning hits in your area. Static build up can do a lot of damage. An earthed ATU will bleed off reasonable levels of static, but old Z matches can flash over, so avoid those. When it comes to basics, there is no real need to use a balun & if working to a budget then a SWL ATU that has good band pass filters is probably a better buy than a Balun, especially as it also gives a good static bleed point. But a balun is still money well spent. I think. |

No one needs a balun as a length of wire on it's own is going to give you many hours of good listening. I have always used both an ATU & a balun. But I suppose in reality they are little more than a bit of extra cream on top of your cake. |
