Do you use an ATU for SWL & if so what? I now have a SWL ATU (Antenna Impedance Matching Unit AMU) on order. I have always personally used one for SWL on my main RX radio as I like the fact that I can bandpass as well as impedance match & thus optimise the signal. Plus for a few pounds I have always found that a cheap AMU with bandpass plus balun makes a simple longwire one of the best general coverage antennas going if you only want one antenna up per radio. With continuous coverage from LF (thousands of meters) to 10 meters, even the best multi band antennas are going to need tuning over 99% of the receivers coverage area. I have ordered a cheapish secondhand Global AT-2000. Which is years old, but I cannot see a current ATU that has been designed for SWL use, or one that matches the Global in ability. |

I've seen many ATUs on FleaBay listed as "RX Only" or "SWL Use" but you're quite right, they're all very old ones / Old School. Strange. |

The MFJ-959C preamp and antenna tuner covers 1.8 to 30 MHz and features a low noise 20 dB preamp to bring out weak stations. It also matches the antenna to the receiver for maximum signal strength. It accommodates up to two antennas (SO-239 jacks) and two receivers (SO239 jacks). Control knobs include: Antenna, Receiver, Inductor and Gain. You can select tuner, tuner with preamp, tuner with 20 dB attenuator, receiver 1 or 2, or bypass. This device is for receive only (not for use with a transceiver). ![]() ![]() The MFJ-956 long wave, medium wave and shortwave preselector tuner lets you boost your favorite stations while rejecting images, intermod and other phantom signals on your shortwave receiver. Operates from 150 kHz to 30 MHz in four bands. ![]() The MFJ-1045C receiver preselector covers 1.8 to 54 MHz and lets you copy weak signals. It rejects out-of-band signals, images with up to 20 dB gain. Gain control. Dual gate MOSFET, bipolar transistors for low noise, high gain. Connects 2 antennas and 2 receivers. This device is for receive only (no transmit). When turned off, the device is by-passed. SO-239 jacks or RCA phono jacks are available for input and output. Metal construction. A coaxial jumper cable to your receiver will be required.

I currently have a secondhand Global AT-2000 on order. This covers from 0.5 MHz to 30. It has 8 bandpass settings, 2 for MW & 6 for SW, it also has adjustable Q so you should be able to narrow the tuning band of the antenna further, thus making a very narrow notch on an impedance matched antenna. Googling the MFJ models above, the reviews look mediocre for all of them, with poor build quality looking to be at the bottom of all the negative reports. I don't know the MFJ tuners, but they don't look like they are exactly well made or that they are worth what they cost new. |

I use a Global AT1000 ATU myself and it gives good results for all my radios via a antenna switch box. |
