Great, thanks for posting. It reminds me of an article I read back in 2009, a friend of mine moved to Tiverton and it took my attention. It was on the BBC news site and read- (Tiverton Age Concern is using CB radio to combat the feelings of loneliness and vulnerability felt by older people living alone, often in remote areas. After the charity was left a legacy by a CB enthusiast, it issued 20 pensioners with sets. For a generation where not all are comfortable with the internet, and with many finding mobile phones too expensive, the radios are a godsend. For an hour every morning, they chat on the radio. Some even have call signs and use slang like asking for an "eyeball", a face-to-face meeting, says Mary Healey of Age Concern. "One chap said 'I can listen to other people talking if I want join in I can but it means the world when you are on your own and have only got the cat for company'.") Full article ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4789887.stm ) Never managed to catch it when I was visiting, so I'm not sure if it's still running or if it has become integrated with the Homesteaders net. Also at the same time was this from the Exeter Express and Echo, ( http://www.thisisexeter.co.uk/Welsh-tune-CB-radio-elderly-scheme/story-11832100-detail/story.html ) Not sure if Age Concern still do this, I have one or two forty channels I could donate if they do. Down and on the side |

I was lucky enough to be a guest visitor on the Homesteaders net last week, whilst on holiday in Dorset. I had a "hit and miss" QSO with Nigel and Brian (163CT108) using my trusty Midland Portapak with just the telescopic antenna. Managed distances of 57 miles (To Brian) and 70+ miles over to Nigel in Cardiff... Thanks guys, it was a great afternoon for me on Hambledon Hill (192m ASL) made possible by the Homesteaders. Hope to have another QSO in the future, Regards, Mick - 26CTX1269 |
