More questions...

I will be looking for a power supply very shortly for the shack, eventually this will be running more than one cb plus other bits and bobs. Not sure our many amps I would need to be safe?

I am interested what you guys run...

what are you going to run?
standard CB usually uses about 3amp max.
anytone says it needs 6 amps
my ranger 2970DX needs 18 amps

so depends what you running, and you only need the extra amps when keying, so the other stuff probably won't pull much when idle.

As has been said you need to think about what you will be running.

I get on by with a 25amp PSU running my Yaesu 897 (20amp draw) and my Kenwood TS590 (20amp draw) just fine. As long as I don't try and key them both on full power at the same time I wont have any issues.

You've got to think about it though when you think you might want to run an amplifier or a rig with a fair chunk of power.

A power supply is the foundation of the set-up - a good quality 30 amp PSU will do you proud and well worth the initial investment.

I favour a good old-fashioned Regulated PSU, but many on here get on fine with a good quality Switch Mode PSU - cheap Switch Mode PSU's are a bloody disaster for QRM :(

I use a Drae 24a PSU in my shack, its 1.5ft long and 10 inches wide LOL

Its a good quality old school regulated PSU and I run a FT840 and two smaller radios at any one time.

Here is a pic of mine.

As Gary said, get a decent 30amp PSU and you will never have to buy another (unless you want to run HUGE power)

The Manson EP-925 is a good supply, there sold under other names, there variable voltage with twin meters and they sell new for about £100 or so, ive had tw0 of these for years and never any trouble with them, there a heavy supply and use a proper transformer and are not switchmode.

The only comment I'd make about that one is the line "The switch mode KPS 280A" . . . . I've never had a switch mode PSU but some Members have been unlucky and had ones that are noisy (in RF terms, not fan noise). Some switch mode PSU (not all by far, probably only a very small number) can give out a lot of interference to nearby radio equipment.

On the other hand, people like Mark-in-Essex have used a Switch Mode for years and swears by it, but another member (think it was Gary) swore AT his and binned it.

Switch mode supplies are usually smaller, lighter and less expensive though.
