Portable antenna thoughts

Many may know that I operate /P. Normally from a rather large hill in Shropshire!

Up to now I've been using a 1/2 wave Silver Rod and have been very pleased with the results. Other plus points are for a start it was cheap therefore if it got damaged for whatever reason I would not be out of pocket by a vast amount. It's also very light and easy to set up.

Apart from my "Sigma 4" idea (another post) which is a non starter due to size I still feel the need to upgrade this season.

Thought about Antron 99's etc but I think they are a little pricey even if they are well made. 827's are out because of the radials. Pity.

I think I'm going to go for a 5/8 wave Silver Rod for much the same reasons I'm so pleased with the smaller version. Any 5/8 antenna should perform the same as ANY other 5/8 wave antenna in real terms so I feel no great need to spend a fortune for similar results.

If, of course, I was putting an antenna up at home on a permanent basis it would be a different story.

as you know bob the antron 99 works very well . but sometimes static
is a problem . i dont think you will go far wrong with a 5/8 wave silver rod ...if i had more space at home i would love a sirio 827 and run the a99 also alongside it

you have got to look for cheap and chearfull, damage an expensive antenna putting it up and down while hilltoping you are going to be gutted

defo a cheap 5/8 silver rod has got to be the way to go, ok no ground planes so you may miss out on a few ground waves but hay ho at least the bank manager will be pleased

you said the antron 99 was pricey. how much are they in the UK? they are sold here in the states for anywhere from $50-$85, and our USD is not worth as much as the GBP.

Crikey Lee . :o . . If you're willing to swap £80 for $100 I'll do that all day long. In fact, I'll give you $110 for every £80 you have :D

According to OANDA today - £80 is worth about $130.

As for a different "Portable Station" antenna, how about the simple nine-up-nine-down alu dipole on top of a 9m telescopic pole (Ebay 300372540350)? Or could even mount the dipole horizontal maybe? £20 for the dipole, £25 for the telescopic pole.

Or even, two telescopic poles and a wire dipole between them?

I use this guys antennas, mostly the portable HB9 for 11m and 45m oh matron!! Normally it is for 10/40m and they are working like hell. He makes them to order, usual time is about 2 weeks. I have now had maybe 8 antennas from here, for others too and all are delighted with them. 2 element with an 87cm boom, nice for the neighbours and works with a tele rotator
