Are they any good? How do they fit together? How big (once assembled) is the "basket" radial section and would it fit on the back seat of a medium size family car? Is it any better than say a Antron 99, Sirio 827 etc in real terms? Thanks. |

sigma four was THE antenna over here in UK. The basket arrangement is a sort of broadband/groundplane arrangement that worked suprisingly well. the original Avanti antenna was made entireley of aircraft aluminium and was very strong the antenna was either a 3/4 wave or 7/8th wave which was always a debate, but the bandwidth was brilliant, low swr accross 25-30mhz. only drawback is they are so noticeable. If you had one, everyone knew you were on cb! if you got one up at a reasonable height you could work over 80Miles with no probs on 4w Unfortunately, Avanti went bust a while back, and they are VERY hard to get hold of if you find one KEEP IT!! Only problems were corroding gamma bar which eventually disintegrated; but many were repaired using a bit of stainless rod The Vector 4000 is a very good copy but no where near as strong, same performance but a bit delicate People say that Vector 4000 has a slightly better peformance than the 827, so if you can get over the size of the monster and in a sheltered spot away from high winds,I would certainly give one a try |

Hello Bob,I've used one infact going to buy a Vector 4000 for "Hilltopping" on Nettleton Top.These are classed as a 3/4 wave. They are far better than an A99 and should have the edge on an 827.The only down point maybe a good idea to use guy wires with "Egg" insulators if very windy as prone to wind damage.Other than some of the very expensive hand made american antennas this can't be beaten.I run a 5/8 wave Shakesphere which is along the lines but are no longer available new.As for the basket in a car...not too sure ,as stripping it down fully every time would be a pain!!!

there was always the debate on the wave length of the Sigma 4 Oggy some people would even class it as a full wave which of coarse its not total wrong length  The basket would fit in the back seat of the car but as you mention a pain in the bum to kepp stripping down to transport so a van would be better |

Thank you all for the info but I've since found out that the "basket" fully assembled is over seven feet long! Therefore will not fit across my back seat Oh well never mind. Plan B. Wish I knew what plan B was  |

An Imax 2000 is as easy to assemble as an Antron 99 and works better too - worth considering. The radial kit that Truck King sell (the same as Oggy uses on his Big Stick) adds a further chunk of TX/RX performance (fits the A99 too). Antron 99's do work quite well when mounted close to the ground - with a Fire-Up top section and the above mentioned radial kit, you'll have a tidy performer. Cheers Gary |

For a somewhat easily transportable antenna for use at field days, etc., what about a wire beam design such as the Moxon? PVC pipe could be used for the supporting structure. Would fairly simple to put up and knock down, plus you could make it in whichever polarity you'd like. Just a thought, I've been debating about doing something similar, but haven't made up my mind as yet. |

Having now looked at the picture of the Sigma 4, what was I thinking I knew they were big but........................ I would like a beam for portable work but it would need to be light and easy to transport. I'm not that "up" on building antennas and always fall down when it comes to the actual construction details and tuning. I've got in mind (plan a two element aluminium beam but have little or no idea how to build one or even how to get the basic materials to start. :headband: |
