Hi Gav, and Welcome indeed.

Best thing to do when you're starting out is a fair bit of listening, see what others do and copy the good ones.

To "call for a copy" we usually call something like, "CQ. This is Two Six Charlie Tango One Three Eight, calling CQ eleven." and wait for any reply. CQ means "Seek you" - or "Looking for contact", then your call sign which includes your country code (26 for England). The "11" is just saying that you're calling on the eleven metre band.

Or, especially if there is a bit of action on the 555, you might want to offer a "go to" frequency, so that'd be, "CQ CQ. 2 6 Charlie Tango 1 3 8. QSY to 27.685". Then you'd go to 27.685MHz (or whatever other frequency you've given) and listen for any replies. Similar to the above but "QSY" means "change frequency to... "

The third way is to scan the frequencies, or flip through the channels, and if you hear a good contact you'd like to talk to, wait for a gap in the conversation then key your mic and call "QSK 26CT138" then wait. In this context "QSK" means "may I join in?". You may hear "QSK acknowledged. Stand by", in which case just wait a bit. Or you may hear, "QSK 26CT138 go ahead" (or similar), in which case, state your callsign again and then say "hello" and join the conversation.

A very important thing if you're QSKing is to be patient and never, never just keep butting in with QSK QSK QSK. Some people might not hear you, or they might hear you and just don't invite you in. Either way, it's the height of bad manners to keep on. But generally, if you QSK and you're readable to the other stations, they'll bring you into their "net".

One final word on good manners on the eleven metre band: it's considered very poor form to chat away on the triple-five (like talking on the Breaking Channel - only Muppets do that). If you get a contact on the 555, always "QSY" to another (clear) frequency.

You'll hear stations doing all the wrong things. You'll hear people talking on the 555, and if you're in a conversation on another frequency, you'll occasionally get the insistent QSK wombat. But most people on the 11m band are pretty good as a whole. Also, sometimes, you'll hear Really Bad CQ calls and a common one is to call "hola hola" (Spanish for 'hello') or, worse, " 'ola 'ola coca cola" which some poor sad Muppets think is funny, Maybe it was, once.... a long time ago.

Whatever, enjoy it. Don't worry about making mistakes or saying the wrong thing. We all do that from time to time. But it is all worthwhile when you get a good contact hundreds of miles away and realise you're talking to someone in Germany, Italy, the Med, Poland, Russia or whatever!

CB Radio 10 codes are rarely used on 11 metres, mostly people use the "Q" codes. But there's no need to know many of them: just QSY and QSK will get you a long way. Oh, and you might hear "QSL" which is the practice of exchanging a QSL-Card (a postcard with your Station details on it) as a record of the contact.

Super answer by Steve (Cherokee) there.

555 is a bit quiet at the moment, but have a look/listen to this Youtube video for some examples of some 555 calls http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrmdXunz_Co

An example of a busy day on the 555! - personally I like the calls that offer a QSY frequency.

Cheers
