Evening and welcome Wizard...personally myself i would look for a Ranger 2950...not that the 3900 are no good iv'e had loads of them ...but for build quality ,performance , it is the best multimode radio out there 24-32mhz...notice i didnt mention its looks(ugly s.o.b.)....less chance of getting a radio thats had sticky fingers in as well ..a lot of 3900 have been murdered by the CB boys...you can pick up a good secondhand Ranger from £100-150...im sure some of the other guys on here will be able to point you in the right direction ...as for the antenna .....bigger is better ...homebase or mobile |

Dont get a blue display one mate, they are bodged together now according to CB retailers and some even stopped selling them. No doubt some blue displays are fine but been a lot of brandnew crap ones! If you cant get a red display get a ranger or something similar. |

You should be able to get a Ranger for under £150 easily, AND it doesn't need the extra expense of a frequency counter which a "Red" 3900 will. |

My older white display version has been fine also - try to get one with a frequency counter bundled-in or it'll be another £40-50 on top (the 3900 is a much better radio with one). Mine was £100 delivered with counter. A President Lincoln would fit the budget too. I'm on the North Somerset coast and I've made copies to plenty of towns around your area, so we should be able to make contact, but those Black Mountains can play some tricks Cheers Gary |

WHOA HOLD THE PRESS !! If you're looking for a Sideband rig Dai, I know THE DADDY of them for sale at the moment. A Supertuned, doggies danglies President Lincoln. PM JollyRoger477 - He has a superb Lincoln up for grabs at £150. And you WILL NOT find a better deal on a sideband rig, nor a better Lincoln. I know he still had it yesterday. And if you buy from JollyRoger it won't be a dead-un, a doorstop, a "joey" or a paperweight - whereas anything on Ebay carries that risk |

If you are thinking about getting a Signal Keeper, make sure you've enough height in the loft - I've seen them listed as being 1.3m long, but with the groundplane elements, it stands about 2.4 metres. Cheers Gary |

Good idea, and when you've cut that hole you can put a Sirio 827 up through it
Unless you have a long run of it, or you're planning on using Big Power, there's not going to be a huge difference in which co-ax you use. Just avoid the really cheap stuff which has braid like a few wisps of Granny's hair. Typically, regular RG58U (Granny hair) is about 40p/Metre, whereas RG58A/U with a much better braid and a foil liner is about 50p/m. That's well worth the extra few pence. (Those prices from Knights CB). I use a run of RG58A/U type to my Antron for "local" TXing on my (4w to 30w) Muppets radio(s) and it's fine. No problems at all and low SWR. I have URM67 (big, fat, heavy screen, high velocity factor, low-loss, etc.) to my Sirio 827 for DX up to 100w but, frankly, I think that's overkill. The reason I installed it (at about £2.80/metre retail!, from Maplins) was because I was suffering some interference and this was an attempt to identify and address the source. Turns out it wasn't the co-ax anyway. I'd say you're probably fine with RG58A/U or RG58C/U and that's a heck of a lot easier to work with than the fat stuff! Or even go for RG Mini 8 if you want something that's really easy to route around the shack/house. As OffPlanet mentioned in the ShoutBox, just make sure you get the PL259 plugs with the right size "end" for the cable you use, and be very careful when soldering the plugs on. A huge proportion of problems that people have come from dodgy PL259 connections. |
