The Review

These radios were a very good buy, i got a quad pack from argos for about £50. A lot cheaper than buying them on ebay! I got these radios home and unpacked them and they felt like a really robust handset and dont look as much like toys than some other radios. I switched the handset on and immediatly started receiving the local train station workers, the RX audio quality was excellent from a distance of about 1 mile with a few obstructions, this was quite supprising so i thought
i would give my other half one to talk to me on while i went to work, I work on high ground 4 miles from home, on the fist attempt i lost contact just 2.5 miles from home but bare in mind the batteries were only half charged and the weather was rainy and windy.

The next day on a fully charge and improved weather i made contact from my work place with good audio at both ends, we tested them also on a 5 mile stretch of beach with no obstructions and made contact with no trouble with superb audio quality, this may be due to the "Tru-sound" technology that these radios have built in, On a good day with the right weather conditions these radios do perform well, They charge up quite quicklyand the battery life is good, i have compared these to other PMR radios such as Uniden PMR885 and Motorola Talkabout and the audio quality was significantly better, the only two things which seemed to affect the radios performance was bad weather and using them in a car, wind and rain didnt seem to bother the Uniden 885's but the range was not even close to the binatone's.

In summary, these radios are decent, they are well built and perform well at distances exceeding 8KM with great quality audio. Ideal for car convoys at short range only as in-car use does make the range very limited. Used outdoors these radios are very very good, even with buildings, trees and other obstructions.

NOTE: There are two versions of the Terrain 650, The version i have does not have a red button on the handset! Every button is black with white print. Also, the white screen surround on my handsets are light grey and make them look more professional.

Thanks for reading.
Lee

Hi Stu..

Not bad thanks mate! you? I no longer have these PMR sets. The can and are used by many shops, driving schools, train stations and for leisure use.

I now use the Alinco DH596 MK2

Posted Image

Really it's a 2m/70cm radio for amateur radio but can be programmed for 446mhz and has 5w rather than 0.5w, Also an external antenna can be used with it.

How's it going with the Albrecht you got from me? hope you had many great contacts on it. :)

I was in Guisborough other week, sat in the pub across from Boots LOL, nice pint in there.

I don't think the higher wattage is making much of a difference, the main gain here is the Bigger antenna, i can get a range of about a mile in a built up area with those cheap ones with a small built in antenna and get about a mile and a half at best with a pair of 4 watt puxings with larger antennas attached.
once up on high ground there is little performance difference between the 4 watt models and the 1/2 watt ones, just a small increase in signal and audio.
Years ago i often spoke with my mate on the cb and at a distance of 10 miles as the crow flies, on 0.4 watt he could hear me radio 3-4 signal 4 and on 4 watts, i was hitting him between a 5 and 6 with radio 5.. but that took 10 times the power to do this.. another 20 times the power.... 80 watt burner pushed his needle to 7, that's 160 times more power and all he was doing was hearing me a little better.
Currently making a 446, 4 element yagi and going to mount it 20 foot up on a pole and see what kind of range i can get..
PMR is the new cb, no interference, clearer audio, if people keep doing what we already are.. eg attaching bigger antennas and using a little more power then eventually we will start to make contact and can have a modern form of cb radio, without all the interference, plt and russian skip 24 hours a day during the solar storm... much better for local contacts :pirate:
