looks like a bit of shoping involved , i will start with a antenna first to see if i can pick any thing up tried just now, getting some signals but thats about it. mind its a lousy night pi--ing down up here.

Hi Taff. You'll probably find radio is alot quieter than 27 years ago because of comptuers, mobile phones etc..Once you get an outdoor antenna and if you're in a decent location you should hear people better.

As for the propagation, things are pretty dire because of the solar cycle minimum. Also the summertime skip (sporadic e season) has not proved to be as strong as last year. So like the rest of us you are going to have to sit tight and wait for things to improve.

As for tvi i wouldn't worry too much. Tv's etc have improved dramatically since you were last on the radio so tvi is not much of a problem nowadays and also the switch over to digital tv will also help as the digital signals will be much stronger hence less chance of tvi. Problem you find now is cb/ham operators getting interference from crappy electrical devices used nowadays i.e plasma tvs, phone chargers, alarms etc..

Anyway good to see someone back on the air after such along time. Things seem to be picking up in this area also. Check out Youtube for videos of cb/ssb/ham radio and that should keep you enthusiastic about keeping up the hobby. I have a channel link is in my signature. Also see 'Simonthewizard, m0ogy, thecobraman' Youtube channels just to name a few which will show you what dx can be worked.

well found a shop on ebay selling silver rod and will supply coax and end fitted works out about £35. also been looking at the dipoles?
the write up sounds impressive on these but most seem to be for ham radios i think. they are for 20 upto 80 metres, got me that one but silver rod looks ok so going to send for that.

A Silver Rod is a good, basic and low-cost starter Homebase antenna for CB frequencies - I'm sure it'll make a huge difference to your existing set-up and you'll instantly hear the additional stations coming in.

The word "Dipole" covers a multitude of antennae, from a quarter-wave wire, through fixed (9ft up and 9ft down pole) dipoles to full-wave loooong wires. The main difficulty that you'd have with a long wire dipole is that, by its nature, it'd probably be horizontal or inverted-V and you'll get more CB and Freeband stations with a Vertical.

My recommendation is to go for one of the Silver Rod family if cost is an issue or, if you have some green to spare, consider an Antron A99, or Sirius 827. They're all fairly easy to put up, easy to set-up and work well.

Yeah welcome Taff to a fellow "Oldtimer",You can't go far wrong with a good quality Silver rod, just use top quality plugs and coax.As for TVI I run 400 watts on the Ham bands and don't cause TVI.So a nicely set up station with 50-100 watts should be fine with some filters.....no problem!!.DAVE ;)

By the way Taff, what handle do you use on the CB frequencies (if you use one)? There's no way I'm going to put out a call for "Taff" in Wales!
