Hiya Taff, and welcome to the CT forum

Da iawn, it's nice to see another Wales callsign on here, as I was getting lonely with all these English stations!

I'm a fairly recent returneee to CB and Sideband after many years away, so I'm sympathetic to your predicament and more than willing to help out with any questions.

Where, roughly, are you in Cymru bachgen?

just out side bridgend

Crikey, depends which side of Bridgend you are, we could be very close. From my homebase to Bridgend Railway station is less than 15 miles.

You'll have to put a shout out on UK25 FM, or 27.555 USB sometime and see if I can hear you.

i think it would help a fair bit as im surrounded by 2 valleys in front of me and behind. i bought the rig of a guy on ebay a radio ham and the rig was checked before i had it and it worked fine. and it hasnt been modified. i will see how it goes when i get every thing set up tidy. many moons ago i had the use of a cobra 148 as my father and bro were into them, and and some good copys into spain italy and loads in the orkney islands. hope i can get there again.

will do cherokee, i picked up a few old rigs yesterday that belonged to my father. there was a cracking little barracuder 40 fm
a mustang 3000, and a cb master2040. so going to fit the barracuder in the jeep, and try and sort out the tristar for a home base.

No reason why a Tristar shouldn't get you into mainland Europe on the skip.

I'm not sure what wattage a Tristar puts out but I think it may be 12W on SSB - in which case a bit of a helper might be in order as most people aim for 50w (or 100W) for International DX.

If it hasn't been modded then you're a bit limited on the UK FM frequencies on a 777, but Channel 33 on High is close enough on FM to get the Muppet Channel 19, and channel 39 High is close enough to UK Ch.25 for practical use on FM. The important frequency is 27.555 (Ch. 12 High) as that's the DX calling channel on USB.

As many will tell you, nine tenths of getting out is the antenna. A Springer isn't a bad start, if it's fixed up properly with a decend ground plane, good SWR and (ideally) a bit of height

I quite regularly talk to a chap on a hill in the Maesteg 20 (that's about 20 miles form me) so we should be on for a copy sometime.

i have been looking on ebay at the burners but got to watch i dont go interfering with next door, dont think there would be much sence of humor there. i got a scaffold pole bracketed to the wall outside so new antenna will go up there. about 12 foot up so should get a bit of height with a new one

If your rig's in order, your antenna's set up correctly with decent co-ax and decent plugs, and you've a low-pass filter on the antenna lead, there's no reason 50W would cause TVI. Adding a few more tweaks like a couple of ferrites to the cables, and/or an "Ugly Balun" (air-choke) brings the risk right down too.

Most people who cause TVI heavy enough to come out of a TV are using BIG Power, using duff rigs, or have a truly lousy antenna set-up. (Or maybe mounted their CB antenna on the same pole as the TV aerial).

If you're going for a permanent install homebase antenna on a scaffold pole, a cheap and good start is a Silver Rod (about 20 - 25 quid). The better the antenna the better you'll get out and receive, and the less chance of TVI.

looks like a bit of shoping involved , i will start with a antenna first to see if i can pick any thing up tried just now, getting some signals but thats about it. mind its a lousy night pi--ing down up here.

You'll find a big difference using a Silver Rod at the homebase location (or an Antron 99 if it's likely to be windy there).

For DX mobile use up the mountains, a Tank Whip or 7ft Firestick will perform well. A 30 to 50 watt amp will improve transmission distance without much chance of causing TVI (if you make sure the setup is installed with a little care, as Cherokee has mentioned).

I've easily copied a guy 20 miles north of Bridgend on the EU FM channels, from a location on the North Somerset coast.

Looks like a few of us will be on-air this coming Sunday on 27.555 SSB, UK Ch 25 and UK Ch 31, so well worth tuning in.

Cheers
Gary
