Do check if your house has a PME earthing system before connecting a RF earth - the RSGB document EMC 07 on the subject of Protective multiple earthing (PME) is not available at present "leaflet withdrawn for revision".

It seems a can of worms on what I've read so far -

The RF earth could be at a lower potential than the PME earth, leading to current drain through the coax braid to the RF earth.

In the event of a neutral fault on the supply, the whole fault current could flow through the equipment to the RF earth.

If any equipment is connected to the RF earth and not to the equipotential earthing system, a potential difference will exist in the event of a fault between the metalwork forming part of the equipotential zone and the equipment earthed via the RF earth (touch the rig and a radiator and get a shock!).

Answers range from running the RF earth to the CMET (consumer's main earthing terminal), using a properly counterpoised antenna and not earthing it, or having the PME earth disconnected and having a new earth rod installed (converting to a TT system).

Of course if you haven't a PME earthing system then happy days - I have though :(

Cheers
Gary

Do check if your house has a PME earthing system

OK, easy suggestion. . . . but what does that mean in terms of checking?

Maybe it's a bonehead question, but I honestly wouldn't know if my house has a PME Earth system  , an ABC, DEF, GHI :( or, God Forbid, a PMT :@ Earth.

My rig is earthed to a radiator pipe - so I guess it'd be useful to know if it's liable to "go live" at some stage, and I've had enough trouble with my antennae without wanting to find out what running 240v down the braid does for my RFI :o .

It should say near the meter - in my case there's a pole outside with a "PME" label on it - failing that, check with the Electricity Board.

My plan is to not earth the antenna pole or rig case, at least for now, as the earth connection seems to make no difference to the static or RFI levels.

Cheers

My home is the old system,it was built in 1924 and runs on steam!!!!!........also if you look at any "Ham" gear (rigs, amps ect) they all have earth points and say you should link them to an earth or an artifical earth.....saying that it only applys if the radios at ground level..........all my ham gears upstairs, suppose could use MFJ artifical earth.........but don't bother!!!!!...its all worked OK for 10 years .........LOL

It should say near the meter

I shall venture forth and open the Little White Box outside the kitchen then!

This place was built in about 1975, I think, so it might be "old skool" or might be "new style". I was half-expecting to find bladed fuses like my parents' place had, but, when we moved-in, I was relieved to find it does at least have a breaker panel.

it only applys if the radios at ground level..........all my ham gears upstairs,

My Kenwood has the usual "Ham" wing-nut Earth point on the back and the manual is full of dire "Earth it or be killed to death" type warnings. But, like Oggy, my play room is on the first floor so, short of lobbing a wire out of the window, a ground earth isn't viable - hence the plumber's strap to the radiator pipe.

The latest addition.

A Realistic emergency CB radio kit from the early 80's - less than a tenner from eBay.

It's a complete CB set-up in a box - a 40ch radio with integral mic, fag lighter lead and a telescopic mag-mount antenna.

The radio is in mint condition and works really well - really good TX and RX. The antenna connection is via a phono plug, but I found a phono to SO239 adaptor and tried it on the Antron - worked very well with good adjacent channel rejection, which was a surprise considering that the radio was intended for emergency use (before the days of the mobile phone) with the tiny provided mag-mount.

I can see this one being useful as it takes just 30-odd seconds to set up.

Cheers

I was expecting it to be a right bleedover box seeing it was designed for emergency use, but it performs really well.

I've a cheap handheld coming soon, so hoping that's a good 'un too :prey:

I can see these emergency rigs are ideal for the occasional situation where we've a couple of cars/vans heading somewhere - might even keep an eye open for another set.

Talking of retro motors, I've always fancied a Mk1 Transit van

Talking of retro motors, I've always fancied a Mk1 Transit van

Long, long, time ago I used to spend my evening and weekends as a service mechanic on a Rally Team. Well, to be brutally honest, I was the mechanic's assistant and glorified spanner-wiper but hey, it was fun.

Anyway, at one stage the Rally Barge was a Mk.I Transit. But before we inherited it from another team, someone had replaced the "petrol" front end and grill with the bulbous "Diesel" one to make room for the bored-out 3.2 litre Capri V6 that they'd shoe-horned in instead of the "stock" 1.6 straight 4. Trouble was, they'd left the original gear box and rear axle, so the ratios were, shall we say, interesting. You could smoke the tyres from standing in first, second or third. In fact, the only time you could practically use first was fully loaded, with the trailer and race-car on the back, on a one in three hill. It topped out at about 75mph, but I swear it got there in seconds.

Another little trick it had was that the back of the van had shelves all down one side and a workbench/bunk on the other. So, with a full load of tools and spares, it'd go round ANY left-hander like it was on rails, but a right-hander at fifteen mph had two wheels lifting.

Ah, happy days... :D

The car, back then, was a Full-on "Group 1" Avenger. Loads of mods, including twin 48dcoe Webers (so one choke per cylinder), with a medium heavy foot on the loud pedal it'd do about five mpg on five-star.

I'm into bikes and scooters, also got some old motors....If I remember right the MK1 Tranny ambluances had the V6 Essex motor in them with the same gearbox with overdrive as the Reliant Scimitar SE5A .I had a show winning SE5A in 1991....I even went to Torquey in it on my Honeymoon!!!!!!!!!.I guess you all watch Ashes to Ashes.........I just love the 80's Music too!!!!

There were some Transits with V6 Essex engines - same as the engine in The Sweeney's Consul GT and Mk1 Granadas.

Oh for lovely big rear-wheel drive motors

Life on Mars was more my style, but late 60's music is my favourite.

The difference between the kosher V6 Trannies and ther brute we used was all in the drive rations. I'nm sure the genuine V6 was sweet, but that half-breed we had was a bloody liability. As a final insult, the brakelight switch on the brake pedal was duff and we couldn't source a new one anywhere, so the brake-lights were on a flip switch on the dash. Of course, in a real emergency, the last thing you'd think of was "oh, did I turn the brake lights on yet?".

The Avenger was great though. We had to re-shell it after one spectacular end-over-end roll on the ATS Stages in Minehead so the owner bought a second-hand Avenger and said, "make this go like that did". Swapped the engine, box, axles, suspension and all that over and ended up with a two hundred fifty horse Avenger with a badge on the back that said, "1500 DL". Had a laugh with it at various Cardiff traffic lights until the sponsors gave the game away with their paintjob.

I don't really have a favourite "era", as I like some of the music and some of the cars from most of them. But it was a good time to be a teenager in the late 70s when you could strip and rebuild your engine and gearbox with a mole-wrench, big hammer and a socket set. And, back then, the cars had more horsepower than their stereo sytstems!

Another new addition - Uniden Uniace 200.

Works well apart from the -10dB switch only knocking the power down to 3W.

Needed a really good scrub and some switch cleaner, but a tidy buy for £10.
