Look forward to it - sounds quite some kit :D

From memory I think the 900 and 901 were only about a fiver apart, so a lot more 901's were sold.

I'm old fashioned, but I think the worse thing that ever happened to CB radios was the introduction of LCD displays - you've got to love the LED's on the Amstrad and the proper S-meters on the other old-timers - apart from a couple like the SMC Oscar, which had such a small meter it would be a Health and Safety violation these days :o

Any other radios still on your wish list?

Cheers
Gary

Crikey, I'd settle for a decent working Cobra2000GTL, even without the box and any speakers!

I've a soft spot for big USA homebases too - I fancy a SBE Console V from the 70's at the moment.

I've considered a new Galaxy DX2547 base - know anything about these? There's an outfit in the US (Walcott CB) that ship to the UK - ideally with FM and UK FM mods maybe.

Also I've read conflicting opinion of the Jumbo - what do you think? (is there a particular one to look out for?).

Cheers

Theres loads of crap banded about Cybernet radios by people who are into Uniden ones!!!!......before you ask I have two unmodded again boxed Cobra 148 GTL DXs ,the first one a MK1 my dad bought brand new!!!!,so know the way these work. The best (most sought after!!!) Jumbo is the MK3 made just before Ham International in Belgium stopped tradding in 1989.These have 240 channels standard.Don't know anything about the Galaxy other than they all look like there built in Jumbo boxes......LOL.I see all the dealers in USA (Walcotts,Coppers,Gi Joes ect) .Just be careful as I bought a rare speaker from the USA for my Yaesu FT1000D and got robbed £60 duty from the Customs. Before you ask,I dont run it on CB ,as I'm a Ham with a full licence!!!(M0OGY) ,on QRZ.com Guys!!!! ;)

I've had a lot of Cybernet boarded radios on UK FM and found them great (sat next to a Harrier CBHQ now) - not had much experience with them on SSB though.

Can you work the zeros with the Jumbo? - that's the one thing I don't like on my Stalker 9 radios.

It's a lottery with the Import Duty - I've bought about 20 items from International sources and was hit for it once.

Cheers

If its marked as a gift and marked as less than $5 value then you dont pay import tax or duty, most sellers on ebay will do this for you if you ask them ;)

If its marked ... as less than $5 value then you dont pay import tax or duty

:prey: You might be able to get away with the <$5 on a little package :prey:

But I think that importing a 20lb-30lb homebase with a "It's worth $2.50, honest Guv !!" written on it might cause the Customs and Excise people to smell a rat. :D

TOTAL change of subject - I love the name of the little smilie on my top line. ":prey:" LOL. I think it should perhaps be "Pray", but in a post about HM Customs and Excise, "Prey" is probably highly appropriate.

Yeah ,the customs guys are not daft, the other problem trying to "Blag it" is I paid £260 fot my speaker/Timewave DSD unit and it was insured for that amount (if not a bit more!) but you say its only $5 then if it goes missing or gets damaged your up sh@t creek, with no paddle.........LOL.I am posting my antenna video on Youtube tonight........Enjoy!!!!!!!!! I was watching that Tower video when my Missus came into the room . . . . . .
...................... I don't think it's likely that I'll be having anything like that in the garden here
....................................... :D Not unless I decide I want to live alone :P

As a Radio Operator I can appreciate the aesthetic beauty of a finely engineered piece of equipment, and admire the ballet of motion as the rotator swings the beams around. The Missus saw a huge pile of wires, pipes and scaffolding in the middle of a garden.

And Gary? Forget it Mate, the Old Biddy neighbours at your QTH are NOT going to stand-by while you erect a massive tower on your patio.

.................................. - - - - - - - -

Does that ground plane make £50 worth of difference to the performance of the Shakespeare? I’ve heard a lot of stories about Big Ground Planes, lots of money and effort to install, and a <0.5% improvement in performance.
[Unless, as Firetrap will remind us, you’re putting a Ground Plane on a tank-whip which is being used as a base antenna, in which case a big plane is vital to get your SWR under 10:1]

Ok with my Mrs ,shes very tolerent with my hobbys, indeed its Sue filming the video!!!.Nine neigbours played helll up with it when I applyed for planning.......Fu@K neighbours, can't work DX to West Coast USA on a neighbour..............LOL.The ground radial kit well on tests with Kingmoff whos about 10 miles away (same set up,power, antenna ect ) his signal was nearly an S point higher and mine was the same to him....plus I think it looks inpressive,so that alone makes it worth the cash............plus how many Shakesperes have you seen with one fitted, or indeed the "BIG" earth cable that was used as earths on big electric motors, its 20mm dia!!!!.......just remember the best rig in the world is as only good as the antenna system.........."Mudducks Beware".........LOL ;)

Interesting - is that one S-point higher compared to the Antron groundplane kit, or compared to no groundplane at all?

I need to look at bonding my mounting pole to earth, but the supply is PME and there's some special considerations to be made with that type of supply - something I need to read-up on.

Cheers

Ok Gary,it is 1 "S" point above the Antron kit..........that had only 3 radials left as the boss had cracked and one landed in the garden!!!!,luckly it was OK and I bought a new boss from Truckking for £4.There is a lot of myths and wichcraft about radiall kits ,but I talk to Kingmoff most days and these are true findings!!!.5/9+5bd to his home 10 miles away.A good ground system into rocksalt (check ARRL antenna handbook) is a good move too.I alway have had the earth on my "Shaky" so this isn't nothing to do with a better signal. The best thing any CBer/ham can do is buy the ARRL handbook ,not cheap at about £30 but it's taught me a lot over the last few years!!!! ;) ;)

F*** neighbours, can't work DX to West Coast USA on a neighbour.....

That's one HUGE advantage of having the Honest, Legit, Ham Licence... It's a valid excuse to have an antenna array for the "legit" frequencies and it's easy to lose an 11m when you've genuine 6m, 20m, 10/12m or whatever up there.

I think it looks inpressive,so that alone makes it worth the cash.....

Can't argue with that statement one bit. It does look like the Muttz Nutz for sure.

But when I have to beg, borrow, bribe or threaten to get some time from neighbours and friends to assist with any change to my antenna set-up, I don't want to run up a "favour debt" unless it's totally worthwhile ;)

I'd be interersted to see if I can improve my Grounding on my DX antenna too, but it's on concrete (stand-off brackets on the back of the garage). So if I want to cable to (dig-able) ground and bury a pipe or something, I'd need to run the cable over two patios - and that's just begging for people to trip over it. It could be done by coming down the mast-pole, then following the line of the back of the garage and around the side and front of the conservatory (under two doors) and then down into (one of Sue's) flowerbeds I suppose. Lot of work.
